Title: Assistant Controller
Reports to: Vice President of Finance
Required Education and Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
- Professional certification: CPA or CMA
- Public accounting experience is highly preferred
Summary/Objective
Candidates must possess strong analytical, technology, communication and organizational skills and have at least five years of experience in accounting supervisory roles, preferably as an assistant controller or accounting manager. This hands-on position will provide support in managing the company’s financial operations to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, corporate policies, & external audits.
This position will also be responsible for year-end and month-end closings, including preparation of journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations and preparation of financial statements and other related reporting.
Essential Functions
- Prepare financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.
- Perform the year-end and month-end close process, preparing journal entries, performing account analysis and preparing balance sheet account reconciliations.
- Maintain and balance subsidiary AP and AR accounts and general ledger management.
- Prepare monthly general ledger schedules and bank reconciliation.
- Analyze the company’s expenditure and benefits.
- Provide documentation for external auditor requests.
- Implement and maintain internal controls and financial policies.
- Supervise the creation of complex monthly client billings.
- Support payroll processing and management.
- Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
- Manage, monitor, and help evolve the financial systems of the organization to support the firm's overall short and long-term strategic objectives.
- Evaluate opportunities for process improvements and implementation of best practices.
- Work cross-functionally with other departments to increase financial reporting accuracy.
- Perform other related accounting/financial duties as requested.
Requirements
- Proven experience as an assistant controller or accounting manager.
- Solid knowledge of GAAP and relevant regulations.
- Solid knowledge around billing and collection practices.
- Proficient in accounting software and financial reporting tools.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, advanced Excel and computer skills.
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
- Must possess the ability to work collaboratively with all departments across the company; ability to manage multiple priorities effectively with a strong commitment to achieving the goals of the department and the company.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills at all levels, including ability to articulate recommendations in a concise and timely manner.
- High degree of accuracy, strong attention to detail but also able to look at the big picture.
- Knowledge of Sage CRE 300 system a plus
- To start, work to be performed in the office 5 days a week. Consideration of working remote will be based on performance and company needs.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department. This position has the potential to supervise three (3) accounting staff.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required.
This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool, as necessary.
Travel
Little to no travel is expected for this position.
