Job Title: Grand Lodge Gardens Manager
Reports To: Corporate Gardens Manager
FLSA classification: Salary-Exempt (Revised 3-23)
This is a full time, salaried position. Salary range: $46,800-$65,000/ year based on experience.
The job duties described below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of this position. All employees may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time to time, as needed.
This is a full time, year-round position for highly motivated and organized individuals who have a passion for ornamental and edible plants, gardens, and landscapes! As a team leader, the Garden Manager will operate and maintain a wide array of irrigation systems, install plantings, mulch, prune, shear, mow, weed, apply herbicides/fungicides/pesticides, fertilize, clear debris, propagate plants, and conduct any/all other phases of plant care at the Grand Lodge and Hotel Oregon. The Garden Manager will design new and modify existing beds, borders, tree collections, and planters. They will also direct other aspects of landscape and irrigation construction, operate equipment, and ensure a robust garden production program. Other duties not specified here or occurring at other locations may be assigned by the Corporate Gardens Manager or the Property Manager. The goal of the person performing these duties is to ensure the gardens and landscapes are tidy, safe, healthy, interesting, fruitful, and presentable to the public, customers, guests, and other employees all year. The Garden Manager should be motivated and enthusiastic about following the company’s garden aesthetic and practices. Long term-vision and commitment to the care of a special place is essential! All McMenamins employees are expected to conduct their job in a safe, courteous, and responsible manner, and report any safety concerns to management in a timely manner. All McMenamins employees will also be expected to keep current on all company events, history, and products.
This position requires:
• A minimum of 3 years’ experience directly managing, or directly assisting the management of a multi-acre, multi-use “estate” scale landscape, or a degree in Horticulture or Landscape Technology with a minimum of one year gardening in a comparable setting.
• An ability to fulfill assigned tasks in a timely manner and without constant supervision
• An ability to effectively select, schedule, direct, oversee, and audit a staff and outside contractors
• Thorough Pacific Northwest-appropriate plant knowledge encompassing broadleaf trees, conifers, shrubs, sub-shrubs, fruiting woody plants, vines, grasses, herbaceous perennials, groundcovers, ferns, mosses, vegetables, annuals, weeds, invasives, and their corresponding care/management across multiple growing scenarios.
• Knowledge of basic soil types, and strategies for sustainable physical, nutritive, and pH management
• Experience organically raising vegetables, herbs, fruiting trees, vines, and shrubs and collaboration with other departments to ensure and promote robust end-usage across the property and company
• Experience programming large, remotely operated irrigation clocks and maintaining and troubleshooting an extensive in-ground irrigation system
• Familiarity with local pests, and plant diseases
• Experience maintaining low-voltage lighting
• Experience operating and maintaining motor-driven equipment up to a light-duty tractor and similar machines
• An understanding of landscape construction skills, knowledge, and concepts
• Solid computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite and others)
Essential Functions of the Job:
• Directly and indirectly maintain all artificial & living components of container plantings, low-voltage lighting, irrigation systems, landscapes, hardscapes, and gardens
• Safely lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds, and any weight in excess of this with a hand truck or the help of another person
• Work in all weather conditions
• Must have a value for diversity and the ability to work with individuals from different backgrounds
• Travel efficiently and safely between multiple locations
• Procure from vendors in an independent, responsible, and prudent manner, all services, resources, materials, and equipment needed to maintain and develop the gardens
• Perform a wide range of repetitive physical tasks including, but not limited to: stooping, bending, twisting, kneeling, reaching, grasping, pulling, pushing, squeezing, prying, and lifting
• Safely use hand tools, power tools, and other landscape/garden-related equipment and ensure their regular maintenance
• Execute light landscape construction projects safely within the boundaries of your skill-set
• Safely climb and work with and on ladders
• Safely and effectively apply some herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and other substances according to the material’s instructions and protocols
• Effectively meet deadlines, appointments, budgeting, accounting, and other requirements
• Assign reasonable tasks to a supporting team, schedule and oversee their work, and ensure their adherence to Company policy and safety protocols
• Communicate professionally, regularly, and effectively with other employees, department managers, property managers, general managers, vendors, and customers/guests
• Participate in the McMenamins Safety Program and attend quarterly safety meetings
• Conduct regular garden staff meetings and attend any other meetings requested of you by the Corp. Gardens Manager or Grand Lodge Property Manager
