Job Summary

The holder of this position performs emergency and non-emergency dispatching of public safety units in a 911 dispatch operation. The holder of this position will be trained to receive emergency and non-emergency calls, evaluate the emergencies being reported and determine the appropriate response. He/She will utilize modern 911 dispatch systems to facilitate the response of Police, Fire, EMS (Emergency Medical Services) and other emergency service resources in a cooperative effort to save lives, protect property and assist the public of Meade County.

Duties

· Receive and dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls to Law Enforcement, Fire Departments, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Emergency Management, Animal Control, Coroners, Road Departments, Utility Companies, and any other departments or agencies.

· Coordinate and facilitate the efforts of responding units.

· Monitor public safety radios and assist units as directed.

· Maintain a synopsis log through a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system of each event documenting each 911 call and units activity and the time each activity was undertaken.

· Make inquires and/or entries into the Law Information Network of Kentucky (LINK) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as needed.

· Maintain security of the LINK/NCIC terminal and the dispatch center.

· Monitor weather conditions and issue severe weather alerts when necessary.

· Perform Emergency Medical Dispatching (EMD) including Telephone Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (T-CPR).

· Perform Police and Fire Pre-Arrival instructions when necessary.

· Perform any other duties as assigned by a supervisor

Minimum requirements

The holder of this position must meet the following standards as required by Section 15.530 - 15.590 of the Kentucky Revised Statutes and as required by Meade County E-911:

· be at least eighteen (18) years of age

· be a citizen of the United States

maintain a valid driver’s license

· be a high school graduate or have received a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

· has not been convicted of a felony or other crimes involving moral turpitude.

· Before admission to the Telecommunications Academy, the following must be completed: has taken a psychological suitability screener, passed multiple drug screening tests, has taken a polygraph examination, & has not been convicted of a felony or other crimes involving moral turpitude as determined by submission of fingerprints to the Kentucky State Police (KSP) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

· Successfully attend & complete telecommunication instruction at the Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT) Telecommunications Academy within twelve (12) months of his/her hire date and successfully attend & complete eight (8) hours of in-service training each calendar year of employment.

Successfully attend & complete LINK/NCIC certification training and successfully attend & complete four (4) hours of in-service training annually.

· Successfully attend & complete any additional mandated training as required by Meade County E-911.

· Must have sufficient transportation to attend all screenings, examinations, Telecommunication’s Academy, yearly in-service trainings, and any additional requirements and training that involve travel.

· Handle criticism and view it as an opportunity to improve.

· Having great people skills are essential to holding this position.

· Able to follow written and verbal instructions including all policies, procedures, and guidelines.

· Knowledge of the geography and road systems of Meade County, or the ability to learn them.

· The ability to speak clearly & distinctly on the telephone and radio.

· Familiarity with Windows based computer systems.

· While performing job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, and talk and listen.

· Occasionally will be required to walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; lift and/or move more than 25 pounds.

· Able to work all shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Required to have sufficient transportation to and from work and the ability to go to our backup 911 center.
