What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant position at Meadowridge Animal Hospital?
Special consideration will be given to applicants who have been previously cross trained to work as a veterinary assistant and a receptionist.
What you’ll be doing:
- Interacting with clients in person and via telephone to obtain patient history and client information;
- Weighing patients and taking their vital signs; recognizing and communicating abnormalities to the attending veterinarian;
- Providing safe and compassionate restraint of patients of various sizes, weights, and strengths for physical examinations, treatments, and procedures;
- Preparing and administering medication/vaccination/treatment via various routes as directed by the attending veterinarian;
- Preparing prescription medication labels and filling prescription medications as directed by the attending veterinarian;
- Learning to place intravenous catheters and perform venipuncture under the supervision of the lead technician;
- Obtaining diagnostic samples; performing (and when appropriate interpreting) diagnostic tests (including but not limited to tests on blood, urine, hair, skin, other tissues, and/or feces); preparing diagnostics samples for shipment to an outside laboratory;
- Obtaining radiographs of patients utilizing appropriate positioning and safety techniques;
- Cleaning & sterilizing instruments, equipment and other materials as instructed;
- Assisting with anesthesia as directed; identifying and appropriately responding to abnormal or unhealthy responses to anesthesia; monitoring anesthetic recovery as directed;
- Assisting with dental procedures, including prophylactic cleaning, polishing, dentition charting, and radiography as directed by the attending veterinarian;
- Assisting in surgical procedures, including patient preparation and recovery as directed by the attending veterinarian;
- Providing client education and instruction regarding recommended prophylactic and prescribed care in a positive and educational manner;
- Helping clean and maintain the hospital on a day-to-day basis.

Pay: $19.00 - $23.00 per hour
