The Medical College of Wisconsin has an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic and growing Anesthesiology Department as Associate Director of Preoperative Optimization and Consultative Anesthesiology at the main campus located in beautiful Milwaukee, WI.

Our faculty team currently includes 140 Anesthesiologists, 26 Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants, four mental-health specialists and 12 scientists dedicated exclusively to research.
The faculty provides more than 63,000 anesthetics annually in more than 100 anesthetizing locations on any given day, considering all affiliate hospitals, operating rooms, and out-of-the-OR locations. Our team provides exemplary patient care through the consistent delivery of evidence-based, patient-centered medicine; education of both residents and advanced practice professionals; and the pursuit of research interests that will define novel therapies in a dynamic and growing academic environment.

Our education program is highlighted by our highly regarded residency program with positions for 80 physicians-in-training, including interns and residents. We also provide specialty training through ACGME-approved fellowships in Pediatric Anesthesiology, Pain Medicine, Obstetric Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine and Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, and additional fellowships in Regional Anesthesia and Neuroanesthesia. Our dedication to training the next generation of physician-scientists is evidenced through our success in recruiting trainees into our NIH training grants (T32 and T35).
In addition to our resident and fellow training programs, we offer a Master of Science in Anesthesia program – one of just 20 in the nation. We launched our program in 2016, recognizing a growing need for skilled anesthetists in Wisconsin and throughout the country. The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
Research
Research in the Department is internationally recognized for its contributions to calcium channel biophysics, vascular reactivity, myocardial protection, and experimental neurosciences, with a focus on traumatic brain injury and the physiology and pharmacology of pain modulation. Our research is supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin, the VA, American Heart Association and the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, among others.
Medical College Physicians (MCP):
Medical College Physicians (MCP), Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin’s adult specialty care group, is an integral component of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s partnership with Froedtert Health and essential to Froedtert & MCW’s successes and achievements in adult clinical care. MCP physicians and advanced practice providers practice at Froedtert Hospital, Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital, Froedtert West Bend Hospital, at other hospitals in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, and at various community locations. Over 1,000 physicians and 400 advanced practice providers provide care to patients system wide.
Many MCP physicians and APPs also dedicate a percentage of their time to research or education. Their work within the academic and research areas of Medical College of Wisconsin continually drive innovation and generate new knowledge for the next generation of medical leaders.
Community Physicians (CP):
Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Community Physicians is a primary care and multispecialty group with more than 300 physicians and nearly 170 advanced practice providers, delivering care in 35 health centers and clinics in southeastern Wisconsin. In fiscal 2019, combined patient visits to these locations totaled more than 900,000.

Opportunity highlights
- The Associate Director of Preoperative Optimization and Consultative Anesthesiology is a novel role at the Medical College of Wisconsin to align the organizational goals of Caring, Collaboration, Respect and Curiosity, and will continue to support the Department of Anesthesiology as a sustainable platform for preoperative optimization, appropriate triage to appropriate resources and collaborate with surgeons to develop processes for patients to have the best possible outcomes.
- Assist in appropriate and timely evaluations for preoperative patients, with oversight of preoperative optimization patients.
- Facilitate communication within the PAT Clinic faculty, RNs and APPs.
- Identify opportunities to improve the optimization processes and develop a framework for continuous improvement.
- Facilitate the training and development, launch and optimization of novel mechanisms, such as e-consults, AI triage tools, and virtual visits.
- Engage in on-boarding and selection of new faculty and APPs.
- Based strategic initiatives, create new processes for preoperative physical and nutritional prehabilitation and the triage of low-risk patients who do not evaluation, Complete a trial in specific populations.
- Create a culture of teamwork within the Division of Preoperative and Consultative Anesthesiology.
- Identification of opportunities to advance evidence-based medicine and develop new processes and work flows to improve preoperative patient outcomes.
- Spearhead improvement processes in the Preoperative patient care space.
- Elevating academia by collaborating with the residency program director and the program director for the Master of Science in anesthesiology assistant program to create optimal learning experiences focused on perioperative optimization. Developing a fellowship program centered on perioperative optimization and consultation.

- Froedtert Hospital, a 689-bed Level-1 Trauma Center that features an Integrated Procedural Platform with state-of-the-art equipment and technology across 32 ORs, approximately 16 out-of-OR anesthetizing locations daily, an award-winning Birth Center and a highly rated Cardiovascular intensive care unit located at a bustling regional medical center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s largest city
- Children’s Wisconsin, a 298-bed ACS-verified Level 1 Children’s Surgery & Trauma Center, and one of the nation’s leading pediatric hospitals featuring a 72-bed PICU, a Pain Management & Headache Center and an ambulatory pediatric surgery center
- The Milwaukee VA Medical Center, a 196-bed hospital that is also home to a 5,000-square-foot simulation center
- Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital and Froedtert West Bend Hospital, which are both smaller full-service community hospitals that have adjacent ambulatory surgery centers
- Two additional ambulatory surgery centers in Wauwatosa and Oak Creek; and
