Reporting to the Department Chair, the Department Administrator for Pharmacology and Toxicology will provide strategic leadership and direct the administrative and financial activities of a large basic science department to include all financial, human and physical resources needed to carry out departmental goals effectively and efficiently. The Administrator partners with and / or advises the chair and faculty on departmental affairs; ensures that the department maintains compliance with all MCW policies; and serves as a representative of the department by attending meetings and collaborating with the Dean's office, other MCW administrators, and external entities.
Primary Responsibilities
- Work in partnership with the chair on strategic planning, recruitment and disciplinary practices, and institutional and inter-institutional negotiations. Build strategic relationships with other academic units on campus to grow specific research and educational programs.
- Responsible for development of department administrative operations to include information systems, grant and contract development and negotiations, as well as system design and development to support all department functions across institutional missions.
- Develop and maintain annual budget. Monitor expenditures in relation to established budget, develop budget controls and reports, and analyze data trends to create long-range forecasts and identify opportune areas of research investment.
- Develop and monitor strategic long- and short-term program and space planning including faculty, student, and postdoctoral fellow recruitment, research program strategy and investments, and facility design. Set priorities and goals to optimize space usage, extramural funding, and Blue Ridge rank.
- Develop and monitor administrative infrastructure to support all department HR operations to include staffing levels, compensation plan, organizational development, recruitment and retention, and team building.
- Develop and monitor systems for auditing and tracking financial matters. Monitors department compliance of operational policies and procedures. Work with department faculty regarding grant application development, adherence to budget guidelines, and opportunities for extramural funding
- Integrate and coordinate department activities with MCW administration, internal and external entities. Negotiate contracts as required.
- In conjunction with Department Chair, develop and assess internal and external partnership opportunities.
Preferred Schedule :
Full-time role with expectations for coverage during core business hours and flexibility required as necessary to accommodate business needs.
