Position Description:

The Pediatric Optometry Residency Program at Children's Wisconsin provides advanced clinical education in various pediatric ocularand vision problems, focusing on patient management and treatment. The residency program aims to provide a comprehensiveexperience in a collaborative optometry/ophthalmology academic hospital setting.

Goal 1: Strengthen the resident's expertise in management pediatric vision problems and common ocular disease.

Goal 2: Enhance the resident's examination skills in pediatric patients.

Goal 3: Develop the resident's appreciation for scholarly activity. By the conclusion of the residency program, the resident will havecompleted the necessary requirements for Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry, should they wish to pursue it.

Goal 4: Training additional providers to meet population needs in a comprehensive medical setting

Length of training

12 months (July 1 - June 30)

CURRICULUM
The curriculum of the program utilizes the mission, goals, and objectives of the residency as its basic elements. The residency programis designed to provide the resident experience in the delivery of pediatric primary eye care to patients from ages birth to 18 years.

Clinical curriculum:
The resident will practice in a clinical setting 4.5 days weekly. The resident will be expected to examine the patient, formulate atreatment plan, discuss the treatment plan with the faculty, and communicate the plan to the patient and/or patient's family.
The resident will track their clinical experiences via patient logs.

Academic curriculum:
The resident will be expected to attend all pediatric eye lectures alongside the ophthalmology residents. These lectures take place at7am prior to clinic starting. This is approximately 10-12 lectures over a 6-8 week period at the beginning of the residency program.Additionally, the program supervisor will review the lecture schedule monthly and encourage attendance at lectures featuring pertinenttopics.

The resident will also be expected to attend the case conference series weekly on Wednesday mornings.

The resident will track academic activities in their academic/scholarly log.

Scholarly curriculum:
The resident will have one half day per week to perform scholarly activities. This includes, but is not limited to: preparing a poster,lectures, case reports, reading articles, article discussions, and development of patient logs.

The resident is expected to have completed the following prior to graduation:

At least one poster.

At least two case reports.

Present at the annual Residency Day event at the University of Missouri - St. Louis College of Optometry.

The resident will track scholarly activities in their academic/scholarly log.

Milwaukee, Mequon, and New Berlin CHW Eye Clinics


Preferred Schedule:
Mon-Fri 8-4:30pm


Position Requirements:

To be considered for candidacy, an applicant must have: Graduated from an ACOE (American Council on Optometric Accreditation)accredited school or college of optometry; 3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale; passed all parts of NBEO (National Board of Examiners inOptometry), including TMOD (Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease); Wisconsin optometry license within 1-year of hire.
