Shift: 80 Hrs Per Pay Period / 8 Hr Day Shifts Mon Fri/ includes Wknds and Holidays, Stand by Call rotation
Statement of Duties:
This position is located in the Operating Room, nursing branch of the Gallup Indian Medical Center. All types of elective and emergency surgeries are performed, including general surgery, orthopedics, vascular, OB/GYN, urology, ENT, Oral Surgery, Dental and Ophthalmology. There are over 2400 cases performed each year. Trauma is a significant part of the emergent cases performed. The operating rooms are staffed by utilizing standby call services after hours, holidays, and on weekends. The OR registered nurse is responsible for all emergencies including trauma and fetal distress C-sections.
- The OR nurse is responsible for total perioperative nursing care.
- Observes and assesses elective surgery patient's health status and critically ill emergency patients utilizing physical assessment and examination, interviewing patient and family members, and reviewing patient's health history.
- Initiates treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures based on appropriate utilization of the physician pre- and post-operative orders, protocols and anesthesia protocols. o Initiates and follows through with resuscitative measure for newborns.
- Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the anesthesiologist and/or anesthetist or surgeon such as medications, treatment, IV fluids, blood products, oxygen, and others.
- Records observation, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures, hemodynamic monitoring data, or any other data relevant to the patient condition in the operating room.
- Provides specialized knowledge and skill to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients undergoing elective or emergent surgery.
- Operates and monitors specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, gastric and thoracic suction, carbon dioxide tanks for laparoscopic and cryoprobe, air-powered equipment, orthairtome, oscillating saw, dermatome, cartilage shaver, etc o Has knowledge of autoclaves, flash and washer sterilizer, ultrasound washers, hi-vac and gravity autoclaves, glucometer and Steris.
- Collaborates with members of the surgical team as well as other multidisciplinary teams in the care and planning for the patient.
- Monitors patients having procedures under local anesthesia by assessing cardiopulmonary status and pain level.
- Functions in PACU as an IV and/or respiratory assist as indicated by circumstances
- When called in for emergency surgeries after hours, holidays, or weekends, functions as team leader.
