What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at MedTech Startup?
An exciting stroke prevention startup has developed a novel device that has the potential to quadruple its target market. Following favorable clinical data from early feasibility studies, this company has raised over $100M from top MedTech investors and corporate strategics with 2 years of runway. We are now enrolling for our large, multinational, pivotal trial with sites in the US and Europe. We are hiring our Controller.
This position will work closely with the CFO to support all accounting activities in a hands-on fashion. This position will also work closely with the clinical team to support the accounting and financial elements of their ongoing pivotal trial. This is not an FP&A role, but a true long-term accounting role that will support clinical, commercialization, and IPO efforts. Prior M&A or IPO and SEC reporting experience are plusses. This will be an on-site or hybrid position at the company's headquarters about 30-40 minutes outside of Boston.
Responsibilities:
- Management of the general ledger including period-end close activities
- Review and release of the semi-monthly payroll process
- Supervise AR, AP, payroll, and fixed asset activities as well as oversee the accounting for equity awards
- Prepare the consolidated financial statements and ensure proper external reporting and filing in compliance with regulations
- Serve as the liaison to external auditors and manage the annual financial audit
- Oversee tax, statutory and legal entity requirements
- Partner with management team by researching, evaluating, and documenting accounting and tax implications of complex transactions and collaborations; manage technical accounting assessments
- Coordinate with the insurance broker and carriers to properly mitigate risk
- Build financial infrastructure and policies that will support the company’s growth and drive continuous improvements in financial systems and processes
- Serve as a business partner and build relationships cross-functionally to foster collaboration both inside and outside of Finance
Skills & Experience:
- Hands-on financial skillset and ability to own GL function
- Experience in public accounting, Big Four or large regional ideally, CPA preferred not required
- Strong systems skills, prior experience implementing new systems
- Hands on accounting experience, including operational accounting, financial reporting & month end close
