Job Description
To protect and serve the people of Meeker County by patrolling waterways, promoting watercraft safety, responding to calls for service and enforcement as it pertains to watercraft, waterways and related activities. This is a non-licensed position with limited enforcement authority.
Job Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Promote the safety and well-being of all users of the waterways within Meeker County.
Patrol Meeker County waterways to enforce watercraft laws, commission orders and ordinances by issuing warnings or relaying information to licensed deputies for issuance of citations.
Maintain assigned equipment and vehicles and arrange for repair work.
Assist in the placement/removal of county waterfront equipment, buoys, and hazard warning signs.
Assist search, rescue, and recovery operations for water-related incidents.
Inspect rental watercraft for safety, safety equipment, and registration and attaches safety stickers.
Assist in the investigation of water-related incidents or complaints to include interviewing witnesses, collecting physical evidence, taking photographs and completing required investigative/accident reports, daily logs, and annual activity reports.
Inspect and issue permits for temporary and stationary anchored rafts and towers in county waters.
Perform other related work as assigned or as it becomes apparent in the course of carrying out responsibilities.
Operate a variety of rescue equipment including boats, all-terrain vehicles, and related equipment.
Assist all Sheriff’s Office staff as needed.
Perform watercraft & trailer inspections relating to Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS.)
Participate in community safety presentations as assigned.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Education and/or Experience
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Boat & Water Enforcement Training and/or experience preferred
Experience & knowledge of watercraft operation preferred
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbents in this class typically require:
- Must have a valid Minnesota Class D driver’s license
- Certificate of training in First Aid preferred
- Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Inspector Certification preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have working knowledge of Boat & Water laws
- Must have working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of related equipment
- Must be able to work weekends and holidays
- Ability to be effective and professional in stressful situations
- Ability to work independent of direct supervision
- Ability to compile and analyze facts and evidence and to make valid civil and criminal recommendations
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the general public, other law enforcement, and criminal justice agency personnel
- Ability to perform assigned duties and tasks in an effective, efficient, and safe manner
- Ability and knowledge to operate law enforcement equipment with logic and caution
- Ability to use computer, recorder, camera equipment and other law enforcement related electronic equipment
- Exercise rational judgment
- Maintain the confidence and trust of peers, superiors, and general citizenry
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Exerting up to 200 pounds of force with assistance of co-workers occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required only occasionally.
Exposures may include, but are not limited to, inclement/hazardous weather conditions, intoxicated/abusive persons, unrestrained animals, body fluids and communicable diseases; incumbents may also be expected to travel to external locations/organizations.
1. Must be in good physical condition.
2. Must maintain mental and emotional fitness.
3. Ability to perform manual tasks requiring coordination, dexterity and strength adequate to lift and move objects of bulk and weight up to 75 pounds.
4. Ability to work indoors or out, day or night, and under conditions of adverse weather and temperature
5. Ability to perform tasks involving prolonged standing, pushing, pulling, climbing, and stooping.
6. Must possess basic swimming skills.
Additional Information
2025 Salary Information: GRADE LEVEL: A12 STARTING SALARY: $19.28 / hour.
Full range for candidates with direct experience is $19.28-$25.88.
