Position Summary

The Director of Cardiac Surgery reports directly to the Executive Director of Cardiovascular Services and is responsible for planning, director and coordinating all clinical programs associated with cardiovascular surgery. This position is accountable for the performance of the Cardiac Surgery service line by building a cohesive team with cardiac services divisions and establishing a positive working relationship with the medical staff to encourage volume growth and efficient patient care. Utilizing the nursing process and clinical nursing practice standards, the Director is responsible for directing and coordinating care for the cardiac surgical patient in accordance with the policies and procedure of the Surgical Services and the Nursing Departments. Responsibilities include but are not limited to personnel resource management, budget management, supply and equipment inventory management, clinical information systems management, and professional staff development. Functions as a liaison between Executive Director/specialty team/and the medical staff; and coordinates all activities in their assigned specialty services. S/he maintains effective working relations with co‐workers, nurses and physicians, outside services and other staff members to ensure workflow effectiveness. S/he creates an image of quality service and demonstrates critical thinking, problem solving, tact, diplomacy, discretion and judgment. Oversee a cross-training program with the main OR and support the robotic heart program. Oversee the development and implementation of new programs for the cardiac service line.

Leadership for Clinical Services Under the Cardiovascular Service Product Line

  • Collaborates with executive director to develop and implement plans and strategies that will further develop the Cardiac Surgery Service Line goals and objectives.
  • Participates in the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process through problem identification, problem resolution, and reporting jointly to the Surgical and Cardiac Sub-Sections Business meetings.
  • Represents cardiac surgery at various work groups, task forces, and committees to support ongoing service line functions, provide input, and resolve system issues.
  • Employs effective change management principles to minimize disruption in patient care services during organizational changes.
  • Evaluates and maintains viability of new and existing cardiac surgery services and programs by developing measures that are key performance indicators of practice.
  • Serves as the project administrator for cardiac surgery services related to program development. Recommend new programs or changes to existing programs to the Cardiac Business Development team.
  • Analyzes the impact of new programs or changes to existing programs with respect to the health system’s mission and goals.
  • Networks with internal and external physician leaders and health care administrators to facilitate referrals, build relationships, and secure existing partnerships.
  • Coordinate cardiac surgery related outreach events to foster community relations, enhance awareness of CV services, and promote goodwill.
  • Responsible for ensuring high-quality, cost-effective patient care with careful attention paid to issues of patient satisfaction and operational efficiency.
  • Works directly with senior organizational leadership to facilitate the integration of hospital and physician goals, meet national quality outcomes metrics, and institute operational efficiencies that contribute to a positive economic impact.
  • Provides immediate supervision and direction to cardiac surgery supervisors, and staff.
  • Promotes team building using effective communication skills and role modeling. Facilitates regular workgroup and leadership team meetings.
  • Maintains personnel policies and procedures.
  • Regularly evaluates the morale of the staff and intervenes early to resolve issues.
  • Holds managers and supervisors accountable for management of unit-specific daily operations including safe staffing levels, safe patient care practices, and efficient workflow patterns to accomplish patient care responsibilities in an efficient manner
  • Supports professional development for staff to enhance performance standards and career growth.
  • Determines the qualifications and competence of department personnel that provide clinical and technical services.
  • Recruits, interviews, and provides performance evaluations for the CV service line.
  • Responsible for corrective and disciplinary action as appropriate to ensure standards of performance are met with an emphasis on staff retention.
  • Provides orientation, in-service education training, and continuing education opportunities to all staff.
  • Maintains expenses within projected budget for each cost center (areas) of responsibility.
  • Reviews monthly operating expense reports and submits financial analysis to the Executive Director CV services that includes justification for expenditures.
  • Evaluates department revenues with the executive director to monitor fiscal productivity and to determine causes for variances as they occur.
  • Provides justification for overtime salary expenditures above budget target.
  • Responsible for evaluating and establishing department guidelines for recommending purchase of new equipment and products.
  • Works closely with Purchasing Department and vendors to ensure optimal pricing has been negotiated.
  • Develops and maintains open lines of communication and timely transmission of information.
  • Promotes confidentiality and uses discretion when discussing sensitive information.
  • Keeps clinical and management knowledge-based current by regularly attending professional conferences related to cardiovascular care, management, and administration.
  • Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications.
