What are the responsibilities and job description for the Jail Clinician position at Mental Health Partners?
Purpose:
The Jail Clinician will work collaboratively with the Jail Medical/Mental Health workers to assess the mental health needs of identified inmates in the Boulder County Jail and recommend the appropriate follow up planning and services.
Job Summary:
This position works within the Jail Medical/Mental Health unit with the jail mental health team and the jail psychiatrists. This position will perform direct client services in the form of mental status evaluations, assessment, brief follow up, case management and case consultation under the direction and management of Boulder County Jail operations.
Essential Functions:
- Meets with jail mental health workers to discuss inmates identified as having mental health needs
- Interviews inmates to assess suicidality, danger towards others, criteria for grave disability, and other service needs, follows jail protocals, and documents appropriately
- Conducts and documents mental status exams according to standard jail procedures
- Pre-screens and refers inmates to jail psychiatrist for med evals when appropriate
- Assesses identified inmates need for inpatient psychiatric care
- Consults with jail psychiatrist as needed
- When inpatient care is needed, follows established jail protocals, consults with psychiatrist for orders, makes hospital referral, and facilitates hospitalization logistics
- Educates inmates and jail personnel about mental health issues and medications
- Refers inmates about to be released to appropriate community resources
- Facilitates continuity of care for inmates already in treatment
- Informs and advises the courts of mental health issues as needed
- Assists with client access to crisis support services and helps de-escalate behavior(s) when necessary
- Performs case management duties
- Meets defined individual and department goals, activity metrics and Key Performance Indicators
- Provides short-term interventions to incarcerated individuals similar to a crisis worker
- Promotes, supports and demonstrates MHP’s mission, vision and values through both behavior and job performance and adheres to policies, procedures, Compliance Plan and Standards of Conduct on a day to day basis
- Effectively interacts and communicates with other MHP staff/clients/customers/partners/etc
- Regular and consistent attendance is required to perform other essential functions of the job
