Yard Hostler/Warehouse Associate Job Description

Position Summary:
The Yard Hostler / Warehouse Associate is responsible for safely and efficiently moving trailers within the yard and between loading docks to support smooth operational flow. When not engaged in yard hostling, this position also involves warehouse duties, including loading and unloading freight, ensuring accuracy in inventory, and maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
Responsibilities:
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard truck and other equipment to ensure safety and functionality
- Operate a yard truck to move containers and trailers within the yard and between dock doors as needed.
- Work collaboratively with management and warehouse staff
- Adhere to all safety protocols and company policies while operating vehicles and equipment
- Fill out maintenance paperwork.
- Maintain paperwork recording the move
- Plug in reefer containers when needed and unplug them for movement. Restart gensets as needed.
- Maintain an orderly yard storage area.
- Other warehouse duties as assigned: unloading/loading, driving forklift as needed.
Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a yard hostler or in a similar role.
- Proven warehouse experience, including loading and unloading freight.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Proficient in operating forklifts; certification preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of yard truck mechanics and routine maintenance procedures.
- Strong understanding of logistics and yard flow processes.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
- Strong communication skills and a team-oriented attitude.
Other Requirements:
- Reliable transportation to and from the workplace.
- Experience in the trucking and/or warehousing industry is a plus
Work Environment:
- Outdoor yard operations and indoor warehouse environment.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions while performing outdoor tasks.
- Requires flexibility to work different shifts, including weekends and overtime as necessary.
