Standardized Patient - Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine
$20 per hour, *Hours will vary each week
A Standardized Patient is a person who has been coached to accurately and consistently represent the history, personality, physical findings, and emotional structure and response pattern of an actual patient at a particular point in time. Standardized patients work are varying times and dates and may be asked to work multiple times per semester if they satisfy the educational needs of program.
The Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine (MSOM) employs Standardized Patients in the training and evaluation of health care professionals. Standardized Patients are interviewed and examined by male and female health care students. Patients will be audio and/or video recorded during simulation encounters. Upon hiring, MSOM requires a signed Consent and Confidentiality Agreement regarding photography, videotaping, and case material.
Education – High School graduate
Experience – Standardized Patient Minimum Qualifications:
-Demonstrate ability and willingness to work cooperatively with learners, faculty, and staff.
-Demonstrate ability to be instructed to consistently simulate a case scenario in a standardized, accurate and reliable manner.
-Demonstrate flexibility and reliability with scheduling and assignments.
Licensure/Certification – N/A
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities – The essential function of an SP is to simulate medical scenarios or cases with learners in teaching and/or assessment activities. Standardized patients will be instructed and trained for a given case scenario. During teaching or assessment activities SPs should expect that the learner may interview, counsel, and/or physically examine them.
The duties shall include the following:
-Work in a professional manner when interacting with learners, faculty, staff, and peers including the participation in quality improvement activities of the department
-Standardized patients will participate in aspects of a medical scenario, including:
- History of current problem, review of systems;
- Physical examination by a student, which may include inspection, palpation, auscultation, percussion, musculoskeletal testing, neurologic testing, specialized tests, and osteopathic structural examination;
- Affect/behavior and physical findings, in a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner; and
- Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) performed by a medical student for somatic dysfunction identified during the osteopathic structural examination related to the standardized patient’s simulated condition.
-Accurately and consistently complete checklists.
-Inform the program of changes to contact information such as name, telephone, and address.
-Accept ongoing feedback from supervisor/trainer and incorporate into case simulation.
-Provide feedback to learners and colleagues in a constructive manner
-Must have access to email communications and have basic computer skills.
-Other duties as assigned.
