AP Lab Assistant - Full-time - Day shift
Monday through Friday
Rotating Schedule - 7:30am-4:00m and 8:00am-4:30 pm
Under supervision of the Supervisor of Anatomic Pathology and direction from Pathologists and Cytotechnologist, receives and processes cytology and histology specimens for the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases. Performs clerical and receiving functions associated with the timely, accurate, reproducible reporting of results for cytology and histology specimens. Responsible for specimen accessioning and preparation including but not limited to fine needle aspirations, WANG procedure, ThinPrep, and body fluid specimens for direct smears, cytospin, staining, and/or cell block preparation. Cytology specimen preparation includes assisting the PA or Pathologist at the time of grossing, monitoring decalcification of tissues, processing bone marrow specimens, recording cassette numbers and special processing instructions, and loading the tissue processor. Performs rapid diagnosis procedures including frozen sectioning of tissue specimens. Also performs clerical functions, sanitation of preparation areas, and related duties to assist the pathologists and cytotechnologists with the production of high quality slides. Performs routine histologic procedures including cutting and staining patient samples.
Education – High school degree or equivalent.
Experience – Two or more years of experience in an anatomic pathology department preferred.
Licensure/Certification – N/A
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities – Basic computer literacy, experience with a laboratory information system preferred (EPIC experience highly prevered). Must possess knowledge of basic medical terminology. Must be able to prioritize duties appropriately and communicate with other hospital/laboratory staff to resolve issues necessary to provide optimal patient care.
