Carpenter

Summary: Carpenter is responsible for performing skilled carpentry work as well as help train Laborers in their job responsibilities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

·      Carries out duties as specified by the Superintendent and Master Carpenter.

·      Delegates work too and trains Laborers in learning their jobs

·      Lays out and builds stairs, decks and handrails

·      Can perform all waterproofing tasks as related to finish carpentry elements

·      Reads blueprints and performs tasks associated with finish carpentry, as defined by current and next level job description including custom work as required by the job.

·      Operates a transit and builder’s level

·      Does all routine interior trim including hanging cabinets, molding, paneling, door hanging, pocket framing, misc. framing and blocking adjustments to work completed by the framers.

·      Uses all types of power and hand tools to accomplish work.

·      Must be able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

·      As lumber is used, checks the remaining inventory so additional materials can be ordered.

·      Checks for unusable lumber and materials and discards as necessary.

·      Provides work direct to others onsite.

·      As a representative of Merlin sets the example for all other construction workers onsite. Complies with all company policies and procedures. Must be punctual, treat others with respect and compliment good working practices.

·      Steadily purchases tools of the trade.

·      Ensures safe working conditions and observes all safety rules. Reports all unsafe conditions or practices to the Master Carpenter, Superintendent or Director of Field Operations.

·      Carpentry position at a general contractor, carpenter will occasionally stand in as general site supervision, always watch for the best interest of Merlin and the larger construction project. Assist with unskilled or general labor tasks as needed or as available.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Education / Experience: No minimum education required. Minimum of 3 years’ experience as an Apprentice Carpenter.

Language: A foreign language is not required. Ability to understand and speak Spanish desirable.

Mathematical Skills: Building math skills required.

Computer Skills: Not required.

Reasoning Skills: Must be able to logically think through job responsibilities and perform them safely and effectively.

Other Skills & Abilities: Must work well with others. Ability to work unsupervised and be self-directed.

OSHA Certification: Must have a minimum OSHA 10, however an OSHA 30 is desired.

Tools Required: Finish and framing hammers, tape measure(s), utility knife, nail puller, pry bar, Phillips and slot screwdrivers, notepad, framing square, combination square, chalk box, nail sets, side and front cutters, wood chisels, levels (2’, 4’ and 6’), plumb bob, bevel square handsaw, coping saw, allen wrenches, crescent wrenches, metal file, block pane, caulking guns, circular saw, reciprocating saw, small disc grinder, jig saw, ½” power drill, hole saw kit, 3/8” power drill, drill bits, cordless drill / driver with extra batters and screw tips, hammer drill, dual action sander, belt sander, power miter saw, router and router bits, power plane, biscuit / plate joiner, worktable, saw horses and ladders.

Physical Demands: Will need to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and climb during construction and field work. Must be able to tolerate heights and work in small crawl spaces. Constant repetitive motion activities such as hammering and drilling required. Shoveling and heavy lifting required. Must be able to use and operate construction power and hand tools and equipment. You must be able to regularly carry, push, pull, reach and lift materials, tools, equipment and parts weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able occasionally carry, push, pull, reach and lift materials, tools, equipment and parts weighing up to 75 pounds and infrequently up to 100 pounds. Must be able to stand and walk for extended time periods. Hearing and vision must be within normal ranges. Must be able to communicate orally with other employees and contractors. Must be able to use cellu.ar phone. You must be able to wear appropriate safety protection equipment.

Work Environment: A combination of indoor and outdoor construction environment, noise levels are higher than normal from time to time, temperature weather, often very hot and windy and occasionally rainy.
