JOB SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of simple to complex investigations of conventional crimes, as well as crimes within the statutory mandates of the Office of the District Attorney. Assists in all investigative aspects of the prosecution of cases, from pre-filing though final case disposition and appeals.

Reviews felony cases and selected misdemeanor cases for strength and weaknesses. Trial support for major felony cases and selected misdemeanor cases as assigned. Coordinates with assigned prosecutors to locate and interview witnesses. Works in collaborative manner with primary law enforcement agency. Prepares reports regarding case analysis, witness interviews and other investigation aspects. Researches a wide variety of records and related documents. Assists in preparation of trial exhibits and trial preparation. Serves as advisory witness as needed.
Responds to homicide scenes as assigned. Coordinates continuing investigation of homicides with primary responding agency. Coordinates with assigned prosecutors to ensure that all follow-up investigation is completed, including locating and interviewing suspects and witnesses. Prepares reports regarding case analysis, witness interviews and other investigation aspects. Researches a wide variety of records and related documents.
Provides support to law enforcement agencies regarding their investigations. Is available to sit on law enforcement review boards as assigned, including promotional and reorganizational boards.
Serves as a grand jury investigator as assigned.
Serves on the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) for Mesa County. Responds to crime scenes associated with CIRT. Coordinates with the various involved law enforcement agencies and is available to locate and interview witnesses, and provide all of other aspects of investigative support. Researches a wide variety of records and related documents.
Conducts special investigations as assigned. Locates and interviews suspects and witnesses. Follows leads, conducts surveillance and writes reports regarding assigned investigations. Coordinates with supervising attorneys concerning progress and status of investigation. Makes recommendations regarding the propriety of criminal charges and case disposition. Conducts election fraud investigations.
Participates in continuing education and research on technologies and current expertise available in investigations, and also coordinates the use of the technology and the available expertise. Is familiar with current forensic practices and communicates as needed with forensic scientists. Is familiar with current and developing computer systems, software and social media sites. Is knowledgeable regarding digital technology and trending social media.
Is available to provide office and witness security. Proficiency with firearms and the carrying of firearms is required. May perform specialized training for prosecutors and staff with respect to firearms and the conceal-carry of firearms.
Prepares and executes arrest warrants, search warrants, and other court orders. May occasionally conduct traffic stops in a marked police capacity under special circumstances, both at the direction of the District Attorney’s Offices, and in coordination with other law enforcement officers.
Is available to transport witnesses to and from court on an as needed basis.
Is available for overtime as assigned, including nights, weekends and holidays.
Oral and written communication must be clear and effective.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
If assigned to the Domestic Violence Caseload, the duties may include the following:
The DV Investigator will be responsible for tracking and referring domestic violence cases to the Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT). Identify local trends and share those trends with local collaborators (The Latimer House-DV Safe House, Local Law Enforcement etc.) in order to create a better response to the domestic violence problem in our community.
The DV Investigator will review all new DV cases that are sent to our office daily. They will review each affidavit for additional charges (strangulation/stalking/violation of protection orders, etc.) and they will screen each case for lethality factors. Specifically, they will use a completed DVSI Assessment, the Lethality Assessment, the Domestic Violence Investigation Form (completed by on scene Law Enforcement), the defendant’s prior criminal history (any prior DV convictions or dismissals), and any pending or open cases to assess each case. They will also try to identify trends in violation of protection order cases that would indicate stalking behaviors and other lethal domestic violence trends.
The DV Investigator will initiate the following: Attempt to make contact with the victim in order to solidify a statement, obtain any 404b information and follow up as needed, determine if there are any additional evidence that the victim has (following day photos etc.), obtain a medical release (if appropriate), and will determine if children were present at the time of the incident and if child abuse charges are appropriate (schedule a Forensic Interview if needed). The DA Investigator will meet with the DVRT every other week to review the cases that were identified by the DV Investigator and the DVRT Coordinator as high risk cases or cases that need additional investigation. The team will staff the cases to identify local community victim service resources, discuss any immediate interventions that can be utilized.
The DV Investigator will work the DVRT Coordinator to ensure that victims are receiving all available resources through the Victim Services Unit, Crime Victims Compensation, and local community resources. The DV Investigator will work with local Law Enforcement if additional follow up needs to be completed and they will work with the DA’s Office Victim Specialists to ensure full wrap around services are being offered. The DV Investigator will also be available for Domestic Violence specific training and resource point for Domestic Violence information for local law enforcement.
Minimum Requirements
MIMIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education And Experience
High school diploma or equivalent, and Colorado POST certification as a Peace Officer.
Five (5) years of previous law enforcement experience, two (2) of which must be at the level of Criminal Investigator (e.g., police detective), OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work is generally confined to an office environment or the field. Certain aspects of investigations may subject incumbents to extended working hours and potentially hazardous situations. Investigators may be “on call” and are subject to responding to dynamic and potentially dangerous situations at any hour. This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting and lifting up to 50 pounds.
