Lower School Library Assistant (Part-Time)
Metairie Park Country Day School seeks a service-oriented, nurturing, and knowledgeable individual to join the Lower School Library team. The Lower School Library Assistant supports the library’s mission by fulfilling clerical duties and providing instructional support related to the library’s daily operations. As a library staff member, the Library Assistant reports to the Lower School Librarian. In the librarian’s absence, the Library Assistant reports to the Director of Libraries. As a member of the lower school faculty, the Library Assistant reports to the Lower School Principal.
Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To:
- Operates the Follett Destiny catalog and circulation program.
- Manages the daily circulation of library materials.
- Provides classroom management during daily class visits for PreK through 5th grade.
- Assists students with library navigation and book location.
- Assists students and teachers with basic reference questions.
- Conducts whole class read-aloud and book discussions.
- Writes student comments for progress reports with the Lower School Librarian.
- Offers technical support during computer-based research and library skills lessons.
- Shelves print materials in accordance with the Dewey cataloging system and maintain proper library organization.
- Processes new acquisitions (i.e., importing MARC records, attaching barcodes and spine labels, covering books).
- Assists with weeding outdated or damaged materials.
- Generates and distributes overdue notices.
- Supports the library programming by maintaining materials and monitoring student participation. (i.e., Word Of The Week, Battle of The Books).
- Creates and maintains library displays.
- Helps conduct an annual inventory of the collection.
- Provides support to the Bright Library as needed.
- Collaborates with the grade-level and divisional teams to promote curricular alignment and consistency within the Lower School.
- Communicate with parents about students’ progress.
- Takes an open and active role in regular professional learning.
- Is an active member of the Country Day community, which could include supervising extracurricular activities or performing other duties as assigned by the Head of School or Division Principal.
- Supports the mission of the school and its leadership.
