Job Summary:
Performs professional and technical level accounting work involving preparation and maintenance of financial reports, budgets, accounting records, and statistical records and reports; provides responsible technical staff assistance to higher level staff for both Methodist University and the MUCFVH School of Medicine (SOM). The Senior Accountant exercises independent judgment and discretion in planning and carrying out the details of work procedures and methods. Provides continuous support and education to management in the utilization of all financial reports. Supports the development of the operating budgets for both the University and SOM. Assists and advises procurement and accounts payable functions as needed. Prepares financial feasibility studies and ad hoc analysis as needed.

Reports to Sr. Associate Dean Administration and Finance of the School of Medicine and AVP of Finance and Controller of the University
Major Job Functions:

- Provide support to managers in the preparation of the annual operating budgets of the School of Medicine and University.
- Supports the budget process (i.e., budget calendar, budget education, individual and collective budgets across the SOM and University), ensures timely completion of all functions.
- Analyze and provide support in the preparation of the annual Operating Budgets that provide sound financial structure.
- Assist with the preparation, entering and maintaining the annual budget(s) into MU financial system.
- Supports the financial software and applications of the SOM and University.
- Maintains procedural documentation to support SOM statistical indicators.
- Performs financial and operational reviews on SOM and University operations and reports as needed.
- Maintains a comprehensive understanding of financial statistics and ratios.
- Conduct in-depth financial analysis, including forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis to support strategic decision-making.
- Develop, evaluate, and maintain ad hoc reports requested by areas within organization.
- Assist with the development of pro forma analyses to determine feasibility of future operational activity.
- Advise and assist SOM and University procurement and accounts payable functions and personnel as required.
- Contributes to the overall success of the SOM and University by performing all other duties and responsibilities assigned, maintaining high levels of accuracy, maintaining a professional demeanor and appropriate levels of confidentiality, and providing excellent customer service.
Qualifications
The following qualifications or equivalents are the minimum requirements to perform the essential functions of this job.
Education and formal training:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or other related field required. CPA and/or MBA preferred.
Work Experience:
Minimum of three years’ experience developing, summarizing, and interpreting financial reports. Preferred industries include health care and higher education.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities required:
Requires an experienced Windows, Excel, and Word user. Must be computer literate and possess strong financial skills with an ability to develop, analyze and interpret financial reports. Must possess a thorough knowledge of principles and practices of accounting. Ability to analyze data and draw sound conclusions. Requires the ability to grasp new concepts quickly. Must possess effective communication skills with the capability of communicating with various levels of management. Must be a team player.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to see and read reports, computer display terminals and have manual dexterity to keypunch data via a keyboard. Requires mobility to meet with management at their service area throughout the facility. May require extended periods of sedentary work and extended working hours to meet stated objectives.
