Position Overview
The Director of Environmental Remediation will lead a team of senior and junior scientists and engineers to develop and execute large-scale remediation strategies across a broad portfolio of sites. This role requires expertise in engaging with federal and state regulatory agencies, managing complex negotiations, and overseeing corporate environmental remediation reserves. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of environmental regulations, strong leadership capabilities, and extensive experience managing remediation projects in a complex organizational setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement remediation strategies to ensure regulatory compliance while effectively managing costs.
- Lead and mentor a team of senior and junior-level scientists and engineers.
- Engage with multiple federal and state regulatory agencies to negotiate remediation agreements, water access agreements, and consent decrees.
- Support real estate transactions involving properties undergoing remediation.
- Oversee and manage consultants located across the United States.
- Administer corporate environmental remediation reserves and develop annual project budget requirements.
- Provide executive-level updates and ensure seamless communication within a matrix organization.
- Ensure the accuracy of environmental sustainability project data, including impact assessments.
- Collaborate with the Legal Department to resolve environmental notices of violation and remediation-related matters.
- Utilize environmental sustainability reporting tools to track energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and waste reduction efforts.
- Travel up to 30% within the United States.
Required Qualifications & Technical Skills
- Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree with at least 15 years of relevant experience.
- Graduate degree with at least 13 years of relevant experience.
- In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 19 years of related experience.
- Preferred Skills:
- Degree in an environmental or engineering-related discipline.
- Prior experience as a Remediation Director or Senior Remediation Manager on a leadership track.
- Proven success in managing complex environmental remediation projects.
- Extensive experience engaging with federal and state regulatory agencies, particularly in California and other jurisdictions.
- Strong leadership capabilities to effectively manage diverse teams.
- Excellent negotiation skills for handling remediation agreements and regulatory negotiations.
- Ability to develop and execute strategic remediation initiatives.
- Strong executive communication skills, with experience presenting updates to senior leadership.
- Familiarity with sustainability reporting and compliance obligations.
