Work alongside full-time or part-time department staff, including an Electrician, Carpenter, Plumber, HVAC Technician, Horticulturist, or Maintenance Technician, assisting with HVAC, boilers, life support systems, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, horticulture, maintenance, or repair to buildings and facilities at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Perform a variety of specialized duties for special events or zoo-wide activities.  Perform a variety of skilled trade work in the construction, alteration, repair, or maintenance of Zoo facilities, with specific responsibilities in HVAC, boilers, life support systems, horticulture, or a wide variety of duties related to the zoological maintenance and operations field. Assist with the operation or maintenance of specialized life support systems for aquatic or terrestrial exhibits, including filtration, water quality, or chemical dosing. Support horticultural tasks as needed, including landscape maintenance or plant care around zoo grounds or exhibits. Perform a variety of specialized duties for special events or activities, including Zoolights or other seasonal events; create figurines.

Position Information
Perform highly skilled duties for an assigned division/department.

In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to:

  • Perform a variety of skilled trades work in the, construction, alteration, repair and maintenance of Metro Parks facilities and a wide variety of duties related to special project in the maintenance and operations field.


HVAC-R technical education and 3 years of experience in the trade or equivalent required. Front end controls education or comparable work experience required.  
 
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • EPA 608 certification required Osha 10 training preferred
  • Valid Washington driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Obtain a valid First Aid and CPR Card within the probationary period.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to kneel, stand, crawl, push, pull, squat, bend, stretch, bending at the waist, stooping, squatting, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Mobility to navigate all types of surfaces and terrain, including the ability to stand and walk for extending periods of time over rough, uneven, wet, slippery, and/or steep surfaces.
  • Requires ascending/descending ladder work.
  • Physical strength and ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.  
  • Pulling, pushing, carrying and lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds repeatedly in the normal course of duties.
  • Exposures to adverse weather conditions in various indoor, outdoor, and shop work environments and may occasionally require work in dirty, wet, noisy, or cramped workspaces.
  • Employees in this position are subject to fumes, dust, pollen, noise from equipment operation, and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized equipment including hand and power tools.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time while operating grounds equipment.
  • May require driving a vehicle to conduct work.
  • Ability to communicate to exchange information with district employees and customers.
  • Ability to navigate emergency situations and perform CPR.
