Teacher Assistant Job Description
Summary: Working under the supervision of a teacher, K-4 teacher assistants (TA) provide additional assistance and instruction to students. They work cooperatively with the director and teacher in providing a classroom environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional programs and available curriculum and technology materials. They work individually or in small groups to reinforce instruction, monitor performance and support learning. This position also performs a variety of instructional and classroom management supports. They perform necessary clerical tasks to support teachers.
Essential Duties:
Assists children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
Supervises students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips.
Enforces administration policies and rules governing students.
Discusses assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
Instructs and monitors students in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage.
Observes students’ performance and records relevant data to assess progress.
Presents subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using agreed upon methods of delivery (whole groups, small groups, and/or individual support).
Assists with checking materials and portfolios, correcting papers, supervising, and testing as directed by the teacher.
Assists with student attendance procedures, record keeping, collecting money, organizing classroom learning spaces, and ordering materials.
Prepares lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations for their assigned classroom(s).
Participates in the daily bus, car and van transportation duties involving children’s’ arrival and departure to and from schools
Performs related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:
The job is performed in a classroom setting and requires the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. The work at times requires bending, squatting, sitting on the floor, reaching, and the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights up to 25 pounds. There is good lighting and ventilation, it’s reasonably quiet, and the work hours are reasonably regular.
