EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school graduate with Paralegal certification, and a minimum of five (5) years of legal experience in the assigned area and/or legal secretarial experience. A Bachelor's Degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience. Notary Public certification required within six months of hire date. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office, Windows, and a general knowledge of litigation case management. Experience with LexisNexis or Westlaw research, E-File, PACER and Abacus systems and WordPerfect are preferred.
SUMMARY
Serves the Authority and the Legal Department by providing legal assistance for assigned section, i.e., Litigation, Corporate, Real Estate, Outside Counsel, and/or Workers’ Compensation. Performs legal research, compiles, and analyzes data, prepares legal correspondence, pleadings, discovery, subpoenas and other related documents, updates and maintains files for all cases both in-house and outside. Finalizes closure of in-house litigation case files to be forwarded to Archives and/or Record Center pursuant to the appropriate retention schedule.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Obtains information concerning proceedings, court records and filings, and case activity. Obtains documents and information within MARTA to respond to discovery and provides them to MARTA attorneys. Assists attorneys in preparing for depositions, hearings, and trials, as needed. Performs legal research and compiles and analyzes data.
- Organizes and maintains litigation cases, workers’ compensation, and/or property files, both physically and electronically. Scans, stores electronically and physically files correspondence, discovery, and pleadings. Enters litigation and other matters into case management software system.
- Prepares legal correspondence, forms, documents, deposition and record summaries, and responses to requests for cases. Prepares draft discovery responses for review by attorneys.
- E-files legal documents at the appropriate state courts. Files documents related to federal cases via PACER. Prioritizes requests and work assignments based on case filings and time constraints.
- Attends court hearings with attorneys. Assists attorneys with monthly litigation reports. Schedules depositions and witness meetings.
- Reviews, prints, and stores workers’ compensation filings and alerts attorneys to significant filings by other parties or the Board. Identifies physicians associated with workers’ compensation files and obtains physician records. Prepares and maintains calendars for workers’ compensation claims.
- Corresponds daily with the public, outside vendors, media, requesting parties and others to coordinate fulfillment of Open Records Act requests. Maintains calendar and scheduling of Open Records Act requests. Maintains database of all requests with supporting documentation in Department's electronic repository.
- Reviews and analyzes requests for public records from attorneys, the public, the media, and other parties. Provides guidance for the retrieval, review, and distribution of open records. Assists with the determination of whether open records are subject to redaction or withholding due to a legal exception.
- A ssists with the removal/redaction of any exempt contents before disclosure. Coordinates responses to requests for production of documents and other legal requests.
- Helps support MARTA’s mission and Operations Department by serving as a transit ambassador (e.g., answering questions, assisting patrons with questions, passing out information to MARTA employees) at least once per year to enhance the customer riding experience during large or special events in the region.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
