Position Summary:
Under direct supervision of head counselor and Unit Leader, Junior Counselors are responsible for assisting in the supervision of a group of approximately 20-25 campers. Junior Counselors assist head and co-counselor in guiding campers through summer education curriculum, activities, swim time fieldtrips and other camp related experiences. Camp counselors model the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. This position is best suited for those who are in the beginning stages of working with children.
Essential Functions:
· Assisting in supervising group to ensure safety and enjoyment of camp
· Build authentic and positive relationships with all campers and staff within group.
· Engage with and supervise children using positive guidance and support methods.
· Prepare for and actively participate in scheduled swim time. (1 staff must swim with group.)
· Provide group support during enrichment/game times.
· Models relationship-building skills in all interactions
· Prepare for and actively participate in camp activities that include dress up days
· Attend and participate in family nights, program activities, staff meetings/trainings, and professional development
· Represent yourself and the MetroWest YMCA in a positive and professional manner.
· Understand, follow, and enforce the safety and health regulations set forth by the YMCA and the Department of Early Education and Care
· Be a role model to campers and counselors.
Qualifications:
Counselors shall meet one of the set of requirements:
A. Be at least 16 years of age and work under the direct supervision of head counselor/group leader
a. Have a high school diploma or equivalent; or
b. Be currently enrolled in high school program or equivalent;
Physical Demands:
· Must have the physical ability to plan, lead, and participate in physical camp games and activities.
· Must be comfortable in outdoor setting in various weather conditions
· Works in a busy indoor and outdoor environment.
· Be comfortable swimming and around bodies of water. Counselors are expected to swim with campers during scheduled times.
