What are the responsibilities and job description for the Program Associate position at MetroWest YMCA?
POSITION SUMMARY & EXPECTATIONS:
This full-time, supporting the program, facility and administration efforts in various departments. The position is based out of the Outdoor Center in Hopkinton but may support programs at other branches. The primary departments for this role are, but are not restricted to, summer camp, and outdoor education. Other departments may include sports, facility rentals and birthday parties, facilities, aquatics, OST and teen programming. Evening and weekend availability is required. The schedule will change seasonally based on program needs.
Outdoor Center Programs
· Facilitate ropes course and other assigned activities for youth groups, school groups and adult groups
· Facilitate Open Climb nights and events
· Facilitate open archery and archery classes
· Identifies and begins sports & enrichment programs at the OC including pickleball and disc golf
Summer Camp
· Serve in a leadership and/or specialist role at camp
· Provide administrative support as assigned
Other
· Assigned based on employee skills and organization needs (e.g. sports class instruction, teen leadership programming, swim lesson instruction)
Core expectations will include:
- Performing ropes course inspections (at height and ground-based)
- Care of equipment
- Assuring compliance with all state and local regulations
- Delivering new-staff training
- Participate in assigned trainings
- Delivering quality programs which set an example for all staff
- Attending and managing Open Climbs and Open Archery
- Participate in planning and execution of special events
- Assisting in marketing and media endeavors (e.g. mailings & social media posts)
- Assisting in Outdoor Education logistics (e.g. client follow up & data entry)
- Assisting in developing & implementing community programs & facility rentals
CORE YMCA EXPECTATIONS:
1. PROGRAM MANAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT
Assists in developing, implementing, and managing operating plans to promote program and/or membership growth for the YMCA. Executes strategies to ensure that members and/or program participants connect with one another and connect with the YMCA.
Ensures a positive working and program environment emphasizing the YMCA’s areas of focus and character values.
2. STAFF ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT
Assists in coaching and guiding program staff and other leaders who operate in the department when assigned
Assists in conducting safety, certification, and service training for staff.
Facilitates communication and provides leadership. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
3. MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT
Builds relationships with and among members, responds to inquiries and solves problems. Creates a safe and supportive community environment, assists in recruiting and engaging new members, and connects members to the YMCA’s cause.
Incorporates ARB (Achievement, Relationships, Belonging) initiative into all programs.
4. BUDGET & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
Provides leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign which includes fund development and capacity building towards specific program departments.
Takes an active role in the Annual Campaign as assigned.
Maintains accurate and to date records, files, and billing / collection procedures and provides data and reports as required for assigned programs.
5. FACILITY MANAGEMENT
Works with appropriate branch staff to provide program facilities for members that are safe, clean, adequately equipped, well maintained, and attractive.
Works cooperatively with the Building and Grounds Manager to ensure the cleanliness and safety of all program and facility areas.
6. VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT
Builds and develops volunteer capacity, sharing the social responsibility.
Provides leadership and support to volunteer committees.
7. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & SUPPORT
Assists in YMCA fund raising activities/events, and engages in collaborative relationships with community organizations in order to strengthen support and build community.
Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the community.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor's degree in human services, social services, recreation, education, business, or equivalent preferred.
2. Prior YMCA or related work.
3. Ability to direct programs through supervision of volunteers and staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, program development and fundraising.
4. Strong organizational skills, ability to utilize several media platforms, and attention to detail.
5. Have the ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time.
6. Progress in YMCA leadership certification.
7. Demonstrated ability to produce positive results in the areas of program development, risk management, participant retention, and assertion with challenging tasks.
8. Demonstrated commitment to the mission and purpose of the YMCA including working with diverse populations.
9. Possess or ability to complete: ropes course and belay trainings and practitioner certifications, CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
10. Ability to establish and maintain authentic and deepened relationships with others specifically with the community (e.g., working with schools, other local organizations) and other organizations.
11. Strong leadership skills.
12. Proven written and verbal communication skills.
13. A professional image and the ability to work harmoniously with staff, members and the community.
14. Possess a valid United States Driver’s License, driving record reviewed and approved by Executive Leadership, and ability to operate assigned YMCA vehicles as trained.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Candidate must be physically capable of setting up and utilizing all assigned program equipment and safety gear on a ropes course
2. Ability to effectively communicate with participants, including risk management, operating procedures, framing and debriefing experiences, and behavior management
3. Ability to effectively facilitate active programming with participants of all ages, in a variety of environments, including remote areas, in all seasons and weather
4. Ability to climb on ropes equipment and apparatuses above 45’ off the ground using safety gear and trained technique, including performing at-height inspections wherein the candidate may need to climb, hang, and operate tools at height
5. Ability to lift/support up to 50lbs in program environments
6. Ability to hike at least 2 miles on varied terrain
7. Ability to oversee a climbing wall and challenge course.

Pay: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour
