Founded in 1910 as the Hebrew Home for the Aged, Charles E. Smith Life Communities (CESLC) traces its origins to a compassionate initiative. A small collective of individuals recognized the pressing need to provide housing, sustenance, and support for aging members of the Jewish community. Over the past century, CESLC has burgeoned into a multifaceted nonprofit organization situated on a 38-acre campus in Rockville, Maryland, serving over 1,100 older adults daily. CESLC operates various residences offering comprehensive services tailored to support seniors at different stages of aging, including independent living, assisted living, long-term care, rehabilitation, outpatient medical services, in-home care, advocacy, and expert medical support.

CESLC seeks a Vice President, Resource Development to lead the creation and execution of the organization's development strategy for increasing revenue, meeting annual operating and revenue goals, and to actively grow and diversify funding streams to include major gifts, planned giving, direct mail, corporate sponsorships, and the annual Guardian Campaign. Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President will develop and manage an effective fundraising program and team with priority on developing and successfully soliciting major gift prospects. Successful candidates will be proactive and strategic thinkers with significant experience in people management and all or most areas of fundraising, such as annual campaign, capital and endowment, major gifts, and planned / institutional giving.

Compensation Range : $240,000 - $260,000

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, organize, evaluate, and direct the fund development programs including annual fund-raising activities / campaigns, capital campaigns, deferred giving programs, major donor, foundation and corporate support.
  • Achieve revenue targets of $4.5M through annual campaign / individual giving, major gifts / legacy giving, grants, and direct mail campaigns.
  • Establish and implement clear strategies that include the effective engagement of the President / CEO and lay leaders to cultivate and solicit major gifts.
  • Actively solicit a personal donor portfolio, including five and six figure gifts.
  • Ensure existing and new development initiatives, campaigns, events, and outreach programs to engage CESLC’s existing donors, encourage current donors into higher support levels, and attract new donors.
  • Supervise, develop, and mentor Development staff to ensure a knowledgeable, skilled, motivated, and successful team.
  • Develop and maintain systems for effective donor acquisition and stewardship.
  • Identify and incorporate best practices and new technologies into existing development activities to achieve key results.
  • Provide oversight of processes and procedures to control expenses relating to fundraising, while working closely with the CFO to ensure accurate reporting of financial results.
  • Serve as liaison and partner to the Resource Development Committee and the ElderSAFE Center Advisory Committee; coordinate meeting schedules, agendas, and provide supplemental materials and reports for meetings.
  • Support the President / CEO in creating meaningful experiences for lay leaders.
  • Oversee development and delivery of impactful engagement and volunteer opportunities.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8 years of fundraising leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated success developing and implementing fundraising strategies.
  • Experience cultivating, soliciting, and closing 7-figure and planned gifts.
  • Previous experience building and developing a successful fundraising team.
  • Substantial knowledge of and ability to implement development best practices.
  • Ability to inspire, influence, and build credibility with donors, lay leadership, and staff.
  • Clear and persuasive verbal and written communication skills; ability to craft compelling messaging.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Greater Washington philanthropy, Jewish organizations, seniors, healthcare, long-term care, public relations, or social services preferred.
  • Proficiency working with Microsoft Office and donor management software, Raiser’s Edge a plus.
