What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Continuing Education position at Miami Dade College?
The Director of Continuing Education provides visionary and results-driven leadership to strategically develop, expand, and manage workforce development and continuing education programs college-wide. This is a Professional Exempt Contractual (PEC) position for which an annual contract reflecting the base salary within the fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) will be issued after ratification by Miami Dade College’s District Board of Trustees.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develops and implements a forward-thinking strategy to expand and enhance non-credit workforce education programs, ensuring alignment with local and regional economic needs
- Analyzes emerging workforce trends and industry demands to create innovative, high-impact training and certification programs
- Enhances partnerships with businesses, government agencies, and community organizations to foster program growth and sustainability within their service area
- Oversees the planning, execution, and continuous improvement of diverse non-credit courses and workforce training initiatives across multiple delivery formats, including in-person, MDC Live, and online learning
- Ensures operational efficiency, fiscal responsibility, and revenue growth through effective budgeting, marketing, and enrollment strategies
- Monitors program performance, student outcomes, and employer satisfaction to drive continuous program enhancements
- Implements successful learner experiences by facilitating career advisement and transition, prior learning assessment and academic pathways from non-credit to credit
- Hires, leads, mentors, and supports a team of instructors, and staff to foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and student-centered learning
- Promotes professional development opportunities and best practices in workforce education
- Leads and works closely with the CEPD team to support and facilitate recruitment and retention practices and program management
- Ensures the fiscal integrity of the department by operating all programs in a balance between revenues and expenditures
- Participates in community activities, including advisory boards, to ensure relevance of program
- Represents the College in meetings and workshops with external organizations and their business and industry prospects
- Creates successful learner experiences and sustainable community partnerships
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate field and five (5) years of experience as a mid-level manager in either non-credit programs or similar experience in an academic or entrepreneurial setting; or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate field and nine (9) years of experience as a mid-level manager in either non-credit programs or similar experience in an academic or entrepreneurial setting
- All educational degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution
- Knowledge and understanding of the College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of a wide range of instructional systems, modes of deliveries, formats, and methods
- Demonstrated knowledge of the field of higher education and the needs of adult learners
- Knowledge of accreditation and certification processes
- Demonstrated leadership skills and supervisory experience
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work effectively, courteously, and agreeably with other managers and colleagues
- Ability to build and manage high performing teams
- Ability to manage, analyze, and interpret financial data
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, external agencies or members of the community in an effective, solution-focused manner
- Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty, and staff
Essential Position
- This function/position has been designated as “essential.” This means that when the College is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at the College.
