Are you someone with experience in the out-of-school time sector and have strong knowledge, skills and passion for policy work? MASP is growing and we are hiring a Policy Coordinator to support our expanding advocacy and policy efforts.


Position Summary

This role will work closely with the Director of Network Engagement and the Executive Director to advance policies that sustain and grow quality afterschool and summer learning opportunities for Michigan’s children and youth. The ideal candidate is highly organized, a strong communicator, and deeply committed to educational equity. This is a remote position with some travel and in-person meetings required.


Essential Duties

  • Monitor and analyze local, state, and federal legislation and policy trends related to the out-of-school time (OST), education, workforce development, and other youth-related sectors.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop and implement MASP’s policy agenda and advocacy strategies.
  •  Support the Executive Director with outreach to government officials.
  • Support the preparation of policy briefs, talking points, fact sheets, and other materials to inform and engage stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and attend meetings with policymakers, community partners, and other key stakeholders.
  • Support the organization and support advocacy campaigns and events, including Afterschool Day at the Capitol, Lights On Afterschool, and National Summer Learning Week.
  • Develop and draft correspondence, testimony, and reports to support MASP’s advocacy efforts.
  • Collaborate with other MASP team members to ensure policy and advocacy efforts are integrated across the organization.
  • Assist with storytelling to demonstrate the impact of out-of-school time programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications and Competencies

  • One year of related experience.
  • Commitment to MASP’s vision, mission, and values. 
  • Understanding of Michigan’s legislative and policy landscape.
  •  Excellent writing, research, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with attention to detail.
  • Passion for equity and the OST sector.
  • Knowledge about Michigan’s OST field.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Suite.  
  • Knowledge of out-of-school time best practices, quality standards, and challenges. 
  • Analytical, research, organization, and presentation skills. 
  • Knowledge in public policy related to education and the out-of-school time sector.  
  • Strong problem solving and creative skills. 
  • Strong attention to detail and well-organized. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously. 
  • Ability to understand and promote the concepts of equity and social justice
  • Ability to effectively work across culturally diverse groups toward a common goal by including and respecting others and valuing their perspectives. 
  • Ability to receive and give feedback for continuous improvement. 
  • Willingness, availability, and ability to travel statewide and nationally, as needed.



Physical and Environmental Expectations

This position requires working indoors most of the time with some occasional work outdoors for events and interaction with communities. This position spends most of its time working at a desk and computer. The typical workweek is seven and a half hour workdays, five days per week with some occasional weekend work, as well as longer hours when deadlines warrant.


Salary and Benefits

Starting annual salary is $50,000 - $55,000, commensurate with experience, plus a comprehensive benefit package including employer-subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance, an employer matched 403b, and other benefits averaging an additional 35% of non-salary benefit. Additional work-life benefits include generous vacation and paid time off.
