Title: Health Education Communications Consultant
$30.31 - $43.65 / Posted Thru: 1-23-25
Part-Time / 20 Hours Per Week
Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan
Purpose: The Communications Consultant will create and manage communications and health education information within the Oral Health Section in the Division of Child and Adolescent Health (DCAH). This part-time position will coordinate various oral health messages and projects, ensuring deliverables are complete and timely.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and develop communication tools and strategies that reach a wide variety of audiences, including the public, parents, dental, medical and human services professionals, community partners, agencies, etc.
- Develop communication plans for oral health programs that include activities, timelines, and target populations.
- Create materials and messages and disseminate through the MDHHS Communications Office to promote oral health.
- Update and maintain the Oral Health Section website on a quarterly basis.
- Create, with state and local partners, and post on the Oral Health webpage the Oral Health Directory quarterly.
- Interpret data and scientific information and convey information appropriately.
- Review local materials and support consistent use of logos, messaging, etc.
- Attend all designated Oral Health Section meetings, ensure follow up and completion of actionable items.
- Work with Section staff to plan, manage, and achieve goals and objectives.
- Develop measurable objectives for communication activities.
- Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in communications, Health Education, or related field required. Master's degree preferred.
Experience: Three to five years working as health educator, communications professional or as project coordinator/manager. Experience and/or knowledge of chronic disease and oral health is preferred, but not required.
Important Skills and Characteristics:
- Understanding of effective communication and marketing strategies, including how to reach target markets, is required.
- Knowledge of design platforms, especially Canva.
- Knowledge of public health programs and activities is preferred.
- Strong organizational skills: strong analytical and problem-solving abilities are preferred.
- Ability to maintain positive, credible, and professional relationships with all parties relevant to MDHHS.
- Possession of strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
- Possession of strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 25% to 75% of the time. Standard office environment. May require valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position plays a critical role in communicating key issues, messages, and actions regarding the strength of evidence-based preventive dental services to a wide variety of audiences. Because these initiatives are complex, statewide, and involve many stakeholders, development and implementation of strong and effective communication strategies and are critical to engaging a variety of perspectives. This position also plays a key role in ensuring development and completion of projects that support the inclusion of oral health within the larger health system in Michigan.
