The Michigan Public Transit Association (MPTA) is accepting applications for the part-time contract position of Training and Support Coordinator for the remainder of fiscal year 2025 (through September 30, 2025). The contract may be eligible for extension(s) in future fiscal years. This position is funded in part by a federal grant to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and administered through the MPTA.

This part-time position is mostly a remote work role, with most coordination and meetings able to be done virtually via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. However, the position will require occasional in-person meetings at the MPTA’s offices in East Lansing as well as certain on-site work related to the in-person events held around the state of Michigan. Please note that eligible training-related travel within Michigan and direct expenses are reimbursable.

Specifically, this individual will develop and coordinate public transportation training programs around the state of Michigan; there are approximately 5-7 training programs throughout the year with varying degrees of involvement. The training and support coordinator will also draw upon transit experience to provide staff support to MPTA Committees, including the Rural Operators Committee, Urban Operators Committee, and Maintenance Committee. Finally, the training and support coordinator will contribute general transit expertise and input to MPTA’s programmatic work – specifically the evaluation and development of potential services in support of transit agencies. To fulfill these duties, the training and support coordinator is expected to attend several related public transit conferences and trainings in the state and nationally (expenses paid).

Responsibilities:

  • Identify the training needs of transit agencies, compile data to report to the training committee, and collaborate with training committee to identify training needs
  • Coordinate training sessions, workshops, and seminars, working together with MPTA staff and volunteers
  • Develop a varied catalog of trainings/courses together with the training committee
  • Maintain training records and stay within budget, including within eligible reimbursable expenses
  • Evaluate training effectiveness and make necessary adjustments
  • Together with MPTA staff, provide support to MPTA Committees
  • Assist with evaluation and development of new MPTA services supporting transit agencies
  • Stay updated on transit industry trends and best practices in training and development

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Human Resources, Business, Education) or equivalent experience (including in training and/or supervisory capacities)
  • Working knowledge of Michigan’s public transportation systems and transportation resources throughout Michigan and beyond
  • Ability to function collaboratively with the MDOT, MPTA and the Michigan Association of Transportation Systems (MASSTrans), and vendors as part of a training committee
  • Demonstrated commitment to the goals of the projects and organizations
  • Knowledge of meeting planning, including experience working with conference facility planners
  • Proven experience as a training coordinator or similar role
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and maintain confidentiality
  • Strong skills in organization, verbal and written communications with diverse audiences, and technology applications such as Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Forms), MS Teams, and Zoom

Compensation:

  • The individual selected will function strictly as a part-time independent contractor (1099 position) with a starting compensation of $40,000/year, paid in equal monthly payments.
  • While there are no fringe benefits included, there is an opportunity for additional duties and compensation in future years.
