Michigan Science Center (MiSci) opened its doors in 2012 with a mission “to inspire curious minds of all ages to discover, explore and appreciate STEM.” In the nearly ten years since our opening, MiSci has reached over 1.75 million people. Today, MiSci is Metro Detroit’s premier destination for educational and fun hands-on STEM learning exhibits and exploration activities. Our education teams provide Metro-Detroiters more than 5,000 hours of science themed programming each year in our 90,000 square foot facility, through offsite Traveling Science, with virtual STEM education opportunities designed for children and families, adult audiences, community members, and K-12 students and teachers.
Job Overview
The Education Specialist displays passion and enthusiasm when delivering educational programs to all ages and plays a key role in new program development. Education Specialists are outgoing and engage individuals and groups with programs, activities, camps, and experiences around a variety of STEM topics. They are team-oriented, proactive, and are never timid about approaching Science Center guests and groups in a polite, friendly, and courteous manner to ensure that guests are surprised and delighted with their Michigan Science Center experience.
The Education Specialist will serve as a team leader in the Public Programs, Outreach Programs, and Enrichment Programs teams and will assist in training Science Center Educators, maintaining program supplies and materials inventory, recording program attendance, and researching new learning programs for Science Center audiences. The Education Specialist will work closely with MiSci’s Educators to design and test new activities for audiences onsite, offsite, and online.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide high energy, entertaining, and educational live lab, floor, virtual, and classroom presentations to a wide variety of audiences
- Engage audiences on museum floor, within exhibit spaces, at off-site events, and in virtual settings with experiences and activities that spark curiosity and a better understanding of our world through STE(A)M
- Assist in the research and development of new learning programs (including: field trip experiences, stage shows, workshops, floor demos, camp activities, and outreach programs)
- Assist with staff and volunteer training for Education programs and events
- Execute processes and procedures in daily opening/closing, activities’ prep, program facilitation and evaluation, and exhibit upkeep
- Safely operate a full-size cargo van in all weather conditions to transport staff and goods to offsite events
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
- Knowledge in physical sciences, life sciences, space sciences, engineering, and technology
- 1 years’ experience delivering educational content
- Comfort learning new STEM content quickly and ability to translate accurately to audiences and stakeholders
- Excellent public speaking ability
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate MiSci vehicles
- Must not have legal restrictions on working with children
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Bachelor degree in a STEM field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Previous experience working in science centers, planetariums, or other technology-related fields
- Experience facilitating virtual programs or presentations
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent organization and time management skills
Physical Demands
Extensive standing and walking, frequent kneeling, bending, and twisting. Lifting packages and equipment of up to 50 pounds. Occasional, limited exposure to the elements during outdoor programs. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Handling personal information and payment methods ethically and honestly.
