Job Summary:
The Youth Career Navigator plays a vital role in guiding middle and high school students through the exploration of career pathways, post-secondary opportunities, and workforce readiness. Working closely with students, school counselors, teachers, administrators, parents or guardians and community partners, the Navigator provides individualized and group-based support to help students identify their strengths, interests, and long-term goals. This role is critical in bridging the gap between education and employment, ensuring students are equipped with the resources and knowledge to make informed career choices. The Career Navigator will work in the Oscoda School system as a Michigan Works! Employee.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one career counseling and coaching to students to explore career interests, strengths, and goals.
- Develop and deliver workshops and presentations on topics such as career exploration, resume writing, interview preparation, job search strategies, and college/trade school pathways.
- Collaborate with school staff to integrate career development activities into the curriculum and student support services.
- Coordinate career assessments (e.g., interest inventories, aptitude tests) to help students better understand potential career matches.
- Facilitate job shadowing opportunities, internships, industry tours, and guest speaker events in partnership with local businesses and organizations.
- Guide students through the creation of individualized career and education plans (ICEPs).
- Maintain current knowledge of labor market trends, post-secondary programs, vocational training, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities.
- Build and maintain relationships with local employers, workforce development agencies, community colleges, and other post-secondary institutions.
- Track student progress and outcomes, maintaining accurate records and data for reporting and evaluation purposes.
- Participate in school and district-level meetings and professional development related to college and career readiness.
- Serve as a mentor to the participants and act as a role model.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Passion for youth development and educational equity.
- Must pass a criminal background check.
Preferred:
- Associates Degree in Education, Counseling, Career Development, Social Work, or a related field.
- Familiarity with school systems, career and technical education (CTE), or workforce development programs.
- Previous experience in teaching, tutoring or counseling or paraprofessional with diverse economically populations.
Working Conditions:
- Primarily based within schools, with occasional travel to community partners, job sites, or post-secondary institutions.
- May require occasional evening or weekend hours for events or meetings.
- This position is a full-time year-round position, as this employee will work within the school and the Michigan Works office when schools are not in session.
