The Sewing Machine Operator should have:
Minimal Skills, Knowledge and Ability Requirements
- Ability to work cooperatively with others both within the department and externally.
- Technical knowledge of the processes and equipment with 2-3 years related work experience in a manufacturing environment.
- High school or equivalent diploma is preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
- Communicate Effectively both verbally and in writing. Must be able to speak and understand English.
- Ability to perform basic math calculations including fractions and decimals. Must be able to read a tape measure.
- Ability to lift, carry, or pull 20 lbs.
- Sew complete bag to customer specifications.
- Ability to solve problems using formalized problem-solving techniques. Ability to understand basic processes and methodically improve them.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including mandatory overtime.
Duties and Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Supervisor, the Sewing Machine Operator is responsible for ensuring that the finished product conforms to the instructions provided in the work order. Job duties, responsibilities, and physical requirements are subject to change at any time and are not considered all inclusive.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Start sewing machinery at the beginning of a shift and test it for proper functionality.
- Ensure that all materials and parts are available and gathered prior to beginning work.
- Address any problems found while sewing.
- Draw threads through needles and adjust the machine.
- Position materials under needle and adjust the machine.
- Replace and rethread needle.
- Sew missing stitches or replacement parts in accordance with repair instructions provided.
- Observe operations to detect any faults or defects.
- Notify Supervisors of any problems or discrepancies during the sewing process.
- Attach parts as specified in the work order.
- Ensure that the finished product conforms to the instructions provided in the work order.
- Ensure that excess material and threads are cut away from the finished product.
- Trim finished bags using scissors and cutters.
- Perform preventative maintenance such as cleaning and oiling the machine.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
Employees should be able to lift, bend, and move to observe and direct the flow of work in a manufacturing environment with or without modifications. Frequent standing, walking, talking, or hearing, occasionally requiring stooping and/or kneeling, and may need to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
