Mid-City Community Advocacy Network (Mid-City CAN), a 501c3 collaborative, is comprised of hundreds of partners and thousands of community members. Mid-City CAN's mission is to build a safe, productive, and healthy community through collaboration, advocacy, and organizing.
For over 35 years, Mid-City CAN plays an essential role in the community and the San Diego Region by facilitating dialogue, identifying common issues, spearheading advocacy, and training community members to take leadership roles in affecting change. Some of our campaign wins include $5.1 million towards two skate parks and a recreation center, the Halal school lunch program, and a regional no-cost transit pass for youth (Youth Opportunity Pass).
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Director , is responsible for the design, execution, management, and expansion of Mid-City CAN's fundraising program. The Development Director cultivates new donors and stewards existing donors to increase revenue while managing grant maker relations and supporting other giving strategies. This position supervises a Media Specialist and will supervise an Events Manager in the future. This position is part of the senior leadership team and works to align fundraising efforts with Mid-City CAN's advocacy strategies.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Work closely with the executive director to design and execute an annual fundraising plan with monetary goals
- Direct and build upon Mid-City CAN's fundraising approach; includes digital and traditional individual giving, events, and grant writing
- Maintain the annual fundraising calendar that intersects with staff media and event calendars; review and present monthly at all-staff meetings
- Proactively develop, prioritize, and act on fundraising opportunities; engage appropriate staff, contractors, or community members in the process
- Proactively cultivate relationships with donors by regularly engaging them in Mid-City CAN activities
- Meet with grant funders and build upon existing relationships; develop strong working relationships with program officers, government officials, and others
- Identify grant opportunities, screen for alignment and feasibility, assign and ensure progress to completion
- Draft letters of intent, write short proposals, assign large complex proposals to grant writers, includes; framing, editing, and collaborating with appropriate internal or external partners
- Schedule and assign funder site visits
- Write or edit reports and follow up with funders
- Research and qualify prospects to identify new individual donors and build a large base of support; monitor and maintain online giving
- Develop a case for support and prepare relevant information for submission or presentation to prospects or grant makers, solicit gifts
- Cultivate and steward strong relationships with supporters and donors that include donor recognition levels, upgrade strategies, and recognition
- Plan and organize development events such as meet and greets, house parties, and annual Impact Dinner via event manager, contractors, and relevant staff; ensure events are underwritten
- Lead consultant activities to ensure success and increase revenue
- Oversee execution of marketing and promotion for Mid-City CAN activities via media specialist to ensure inclusion of donor appeals and maximize revenue generation
- Ensure continuity across Mid-City CAN fundraising, campaign, and communications efforts
- Monitor and track fundraising results by category and / or appeal on an ongoing basis to measure results and track progress toward goals
- Use donor software for tracking, reporting, and analysis, while ensuring donor privacy, data accuracy, and timeliness of acknowledgements and reporting
- Attend external civic and cultural events in the community; represent the organization by speaking at public events as requested

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Physical Requirements and Work Environment : Work is performed in an office or community setting; employee regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment 6 to 8 hours per day; occasionally lifts, carries, and positions objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Position involves regular use of a computer and keyboard, telephone, and face-to-face communications; employee should be able to communicate clearly and professionally in all of these manners. Position works in community settings, may be standing at event table, and walks neighborhood for several hours on as needed basis. Health and Safety
Compensation : The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is commensurate with work experience, skills, and educational background, in the range of $85,000 - &98,000 annually.
