Mid Continent Engineering is seeking a VP of Operations to join our team! This is a 1st Shift opportunity located in Minneapolis, MN.

Mid-Continent has been a supplier to first-tier OEMs within the medical, aerospace and defense industries for decades. Summary:

Manages all activities related to operations and development of company products by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following:

  • Develops and maintains manufacturing operations business plans to include all program requirements, labor hours, cycle, production costs, and image.
  • Provides input to the development of product strategy and research and development of new and emerging products.
  • Establishes production and quality control standards, develops budget, cost controls, and obtains data regarding types, quantities, specifications, and delivery dates of products ordered.
  • Provides guidance to the development of a manufacturing process plan, including personnel requirements, material needs, subcontract requirements, facility needs, and tooling and equipment needs.
  • Ensuring all established costs, quality, and delivery commitments are met.
  • Coordinates manufacturing activities with all other functions of the organization and suppliers to obtain optimum production and utilization of personnel resources, machines, and equipment.
  • Reviews production and operating reports and directs the resolution of operational, manufacturing, and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Trains and ensures all assigned employees are aware of and comply with company, government, and customer policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Overseeing 2 facilities and must be open to travel.
  • Work to execute and fulfill strategic business plans presented by the President/ CFO and Board of Directors.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Safety

  • Support and Drive safety program culture for Zero Incidents
  • Review/Implementation of safety program and training.
  • Improve safety rate (reduce incident rate).
  • Responsible for promoting the company Safety Program and to ensure plant personnel adhere to the existing Safety Procedures.

Production

  • Manage employees, schedule, and all costs of operations (Control material costs).
  • Evaluate work of employees
  • Work with supervisors to plan, assign, and review/evaluate work of all employees.
  • Supervise continuing development of employees.
  • Drive the development, training, and implementation of standard operating procedures.
  • Track production time and drive crews to hit or lower target hours – (control man hours).
  • Challenge employees to find time saving ideas and implement them.
  • Mentor and teach leadership skills.
  • Develop and maintain safe positive working environment.
  • Handle plant problems and find solutions.
  • Provide guidance and lead by example.
  • Make decisions to ensure the right job is being worked on at the right time.
  • Frequently evaluate and analyze business productivity/ performance.

Technology

  • Evaluate capital equipment requests for ROI.
  • Identify future equipment needs (long range capacity planning).
  • Stay abreast of and recommend technology improvements and upgrades.
  • Encourage technological training for productivity and maintenance improvements.
  • Recommend process changes to improve productivity, quality, etc.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained properly.

Administrative

  • Ensure supervisors are addressing discipline issues with leads, managers, and/ or employees.
  • Working with the company recruiter & human resource department to create job descriptions, hire competent personnel, and oversee employee training programs.
  • Perform employee evaluations as required.
  • Develop, implement, new and revised record keeping systems/ procedures.
  • Give continuous interpretation of rules and regulations.
  • Discipline employees and hold those responsible accountable.
  • Initiate project meetings to ensure continuous improvement of plant performance.

Engineering

  • Ensure reviews of engineering designs are taking place.
  • Liaison between the customer and Engineering/ Estimating Engineering Manager, Manufacturing, Sales, and Production Control.

Quality

  • Ensure product quality by reviewing documents, reports, forms, and other material for content, completeness, or accuracy. (Contract Review)
  • Serve as liaison between the customer and VP of Quality Department.

Sales

  • Work with sales personnel to develop marketing plan and strategies.
  • To oversee that sales are made within company capabilities and at required margins.
  • Review quotes as required.
  • Initiate project kick-off meetings and project review meetings.

Safety

Education & Experience:

  • Prefer bachelor’s degree in manufacturing or engineering and 10 years of experience in a managerial business position or work experience equivalent.
  • Has supervised an organization of at least 85 employees.
  • Specific Lean Manufacturing background desired.
  • Understanding of welding, machining, assembly, and other manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Diligent and proactive results- driven personality
  • Strong business acuity with solid knowledge of finance supply chain distribution, and employee management.
  • Superior knowledge of industry regulations and operational guidelines.
  • Solid computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Experience with Epicor ERP Software is a plus.

Employees must be able to cope with Minnesota climate variances, endure heat & cold conditions in the shop. Endure heavy workloads, high noise levels from hammering, and grinding (hearing protection provided). Protect against metal particles, fumes, sparks, particles, and gases (safety glasses, safety-toed boots, ear plugs, and gloves provided per the company policy guidelines).

Individuals working in an office setting will not endure some of the physical & work environments conditions of the production floor unless office is adjacent to the production floor or per the individuals job duties and/ or responsibilities. All office personnel must abide by the PPE guidelines (safety glasses, safety-toed boots that are provided per the company policy guidelines) when entering the production floor or if a requirement of a department that individual is entering or working in.
