Overview: An ‘Automatic Upsetter’ is a type of forging equipment, related to the mechanical press, with the purpose of forging mults into splines and axles. Upset forging involves locally heating a metal bar and then, while holding it firmly with special tooling, applying pressure to the end of the bar in the direction of its axis to deform it to customer specifications and tolerances.

The Upsetter Operator is responsible for the initial startup of their assigned upsetter and related machinery as well as conducting any relevant safety checks of immediate the work area and managing the operation of the Automatic Upsetters throughout the duration of shift.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Start up, check and operate the Automatic Upsetter, as well as related equipment such as Furnaces or Heaters, Cranes, and Conveyors as needed.
  • Collaborates with the Utility person and helper as needed to transport raw material effectively and safely.
  • Maintains a safe and clean workspace including areas on and around assigned Upsetter machine, as well as surrounding the work environment within the Forge.
  • Measures raw material and or finished products for conformance specifications with the use of hand and pneumatic tools such as Tape Measure, Dial Indicators, Length Gage, Scale/Rule, Roll Stand, and Micrometers.
  • Adheres to quality standards and related audits as required specific to each product line including inspecting the condition of raw materials, the standard of completed products and the amount of scrap materials.
  • Updates product line documentation as changes are made to existing part setup and production cadence.
  • Communicates via radio any relevant updates pertaining to the Upsetter performance including but not limited to changes to unit stock, safety concerns, mechanical errors and/or any other interruption to production as needed.
  • Follows all safety and plant rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This role has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • One to three months related experience and/or training preferred.

Key Competencies

Communication Skills:

  • Ability to read and write simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively report relevant data and job specific information as needed.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to perform basic mathematics.

Computer Skills:

  • Ability to navigate basic technology including but not limited to use of digital self-service platforms, time clocks, and other systems where applicable.

Additional Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience in manufacturing environments or a mechanical aptitude
  • Experience using; Tape Measure, Dial Indicators, Length Gage, Scale/Rule, Roll Stand, and Micrometers.
  • Previous experience operating overhead cranes, pallet jacks, or other related lift devices.
  • Satisfactory completion of Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test Preferred

Physical Demands:

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts
  • Use carts, dollies, cranes and jacks to transport material if needed
  • Climbing ladders and stairs to reach work at potential heights of 30ft or more
  • Navigate narrow walkways, confined spaces and overhead mezzanines
  • Tolerate potentially extreme temperature fluctuations impacted by weather and machinery
  • Acclimate to high noise and vibration levels in work spaces
  • Wear and adhere to all PPE guidelines including hard hats, protective eye wear, ear plugs, and approved footwear with metatarsal and steel toe safeguards
  • Must be able to regularly lift and or move up to 40 bs.

Work Environment:

The Automatic Upsetter Operator will work within our Forge facility interacting with historic machinery which often involves close proximity to heat, noise, debris, conveyance systems and other potentially dangerous equipment. The Upsetter Operator will encounter high levels of floor and overhead traffic due to material transportation throughout the facility which can cause high levels of vibration and airborne disturbances. There are areas of paved and unpaved walkway, active shipping lanes and occasionally standing water to be cautious of.
