What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Operations position at Middlebury College?
The Director of Operations provides managerial, leadership, and analytical support to and on behalf of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Institute – in concert with the Office of the Provost – to oversee budget management, Institute-wide event management, process and procedures management, relationship management with local communities and administrative support for the Board of Advisors. The incumbent operates with an institutional mindset and a high degree of independence, proactive decision making, and discretion.
This is a full time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $94,946 - $108,011 per year. The anticipated start date for this role is mid-June 2025.
Core Responsibilities:
- Manage, evaluate, and analyze the majority of the Institute’s budget independently, coordinating with the Vice President and the Office of the Provost for optimal allocation to meet Institute and institutional objectives.
- Oversee campus-wide event planning, coordination, and logistics, providing direction to the Director of Institute Events and the Event Logistics Coordinator.
- Develop, streamline, and improve processes, procedures, and systems for the Institute and Academic Affairs.
- Provide support for the Institute Board of Advisors, organizing onsite meeting, coordinating meeting agenda, and preparing and managing minutes.
- Support the Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA) and the Dean of Institute in their role as the
- Institute’s town/gown liaison with the local Monterey community, including the City of Monterey and local organizations.
- Oversee campus-wide emergency planning and response protocols, providing oversight of the Emergency Management Team and Threat Assessment Management team.
- Supervise two direct reports: Director of Institute Events and Operations Manager
- Minimum 10 years of experience in managing organization-wide operational functions in higher education, private sector, or non-profit organizations.
- Expertise with accounting principles and budget allocation and highly skilled in using Excel.
- Successful supervisory experience.
- Political sensitivity and interpersonal skills to establish credibility and maintain relationships with senior administrators, faculty, staff, students, and the public.
- Expertise with the principles and practices of program/ project management, effective management, supervision, and evaluation.
- Advanced oral and written communication skills.
- BA required/MA is preferred.
- Knowledge of Institute policies and procedures and major administrative units and their functions is a plus.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Requires the ability to sit for extended periods time, walk, bend, climb, push/pull, lift, and carry up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Requires ability to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to grasp issues quickly.
- Require ability to quickly compose email messages and other communication.
- Requires ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
