Behavior Intervention (BI) Paraprofessional
The Behavior Intervention Paraprofessional is a vital member of the special education team. This
position plays a critical role in supporting students with behavioral challenges by implementing
behavior intervention strategies and providing one-on-one and small group assistance. The Behavior
Intervention Paraprofessional will work closely with students, teachers, and related service providers
to create a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes academic, social, and
behavioral success.
Key Responsibilities:
Individualized Support: Provide one-on-one and small group support to students with behavioral
challenges, assisting them in managing their emotions and behaviors in the school setting.
Behavioral Planning: Assist in the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans
(BIPs) and strategies to address individual students' needs.
Data Collection: Collect data on students' IEP goals and progress, recording observations and
incidents accurately to inform decision-making.
Crisis Management: Assist in de-escalating and managing crisis situations to ensure the safety of
students and staff.
Collaboration: Work closely with teachers, special education staff, and other professionals to
promote a cohesive approach to student support.
Instructional Support: Support the educational process by providing instruction under the
supervision of the special education teacher, with a focus on teaching social/emotional skills in an
effort to decrease behavior and increase student learning.
Communication: Maintain open and effective communication with special education teacher(s),
general education teacher(s), school administrators and other team members regarding student
progress and behavior.
Professional Development: Participate in training and professional development opportunities to
enhance knowledge and skills related to behavior intervention and special education.
Maintain a Safe Environment: Promote a safe and nurturing school environment by implementing
safety protocols and reinforcing positive behavior.
Behavior Intervention (BI) Paraprofessional
Qualifications:
● High school diploma or equivalent
● Demonstrate through a state board approved academic assessment knowledge of and the
ability to assist in instructing or preparing students to be instructed in the academic areas
they are providing support in; or
● Have completed at least two (2) years of study at an accredited postsecondary educational
institution; or
● An associate degree or higher level degree.
● Experience working with students with behavioral challenges is preferred.
● Knowledge of behavior intervention strategies and techniques.
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
● Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
● Ability to work effectively in a team and follow directions from professionals.
● Understanding of special education principles and procedures.
Physical Requirements:
This position may require the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, assist with mobility, and
engage in physical activities to ensure student safety.
Working Conditions:
