GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Laundry Room Attendant /Homeless Community in-reach staff is a new position that The Midnight Mission deems vital to providing a safe, clean, secure, trauma-free resource for people who are experiencing homelessness on the streets of skid-row. The laundry room will be in use 8 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Security Supervisor, the laundry room attendant will provide a safe, clean, secure trauma-free environment and perform various laundry duties within The Midnight Mission Laundry Room.
- Collect mesh bags of dirty laundry,
- Ensure guests have properly counted and documented all items,
- Wash/dry clothing,
- Properly use and maintain laundry room equipment,
- Provide friendly welcoming customer service to guests,
- Ensure laundry room is not being used for inappropriate activities such as drug use or selling/exchanging of drugs, smoking, loitering, or other unsuitable activities.
- Report suspicious individuals and/or activity to Security Supervisor/Staff.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
- Laundry Room Attendant should be informed of all services offered by The Midnight Mission.

Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of general laundry cleaning skills and cleaning techniques
- Ability to project a professional demeanor and exercise mature judgement
- Engagement and rapport building skills with all guests, including those who present difficulties
- Demonstrated ability to work with individuals of diverse social, economic and cultural backgrounds
- Knowledge about non-violent crisis intervention techniques
- Ability to work independently and complete assigned duties with minimum supervision.
- Flexible, adaptable, and capable of working in a fast-paced environment that requires sensitivity and professionalism
- Availability to work evening and weekends as requested by management, and based on the operational needs of the program
- Ability to work harmoniously and cooperatively as a team player.
- Demonstrated ability to read, write, and speak English – must be able to read words and phrases in English on cleaning supply containers, etc.
- Ability to arrive to work reliably and on time
Required Qualifications
- Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9 and valid California ID or Driver’s License)
- Ability to maintain regular, consistent attendance
- Updated TB test
- Successful completion of background screening
- Fully vaccinated for covid-19 and boosted if over 5 months since vaccination
- Successful completion of drug testing – we reserve our legal right to refuse hiring candidates who test positive for prescriptive medical marijuana use [70 Cal.Rptr.3d 382 (2008), AB243, AB266, SB643]
- Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens Training through TMM

Work Environment
The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using alcohol and drugs, and who may not be attentive to basic personal hygiene, health and safety practices. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the client’s use of alcohol and drugs, and lack of personal hygiene. The employee must be ready to respond quickly and effectively to many types of situations, including crisis situations and potentially hostile situations. Attendant must know when to use appropriate personal protective equipment when dealing with soiled or infected clothing. The noise level in the work environment has a wide range depending upon the individuals using laundry room and the external environment. Sometimes work may become stressful when working under pressure.
