Purpose: To effectively and reliably assist clients to identify and remove barriers preventing them from achieving individual recovery goals.
Job Summary:
The Peer Recovery Specialist draws upon their personal growth experience to carry the message of hope and recovery to individuals who are currently enrolled in treatment services. By offering outreach, encouragement, and support, the Peer Recovery Specialist cultivates and secures a connection with the enrolled individual, while teaching personal responsibility and serving as a mentor and role model. The Peer Recovery Specialist will provide direct services to individuals in the areas of outreach and engagement; personal assistance in the completion of daily living skills; linkage to community supports; transportation; and in-home services. The Peer Recovery Specialist is trained to empower clients that are engaged in residential and non-residential treatment services. A successful Peer Recovery Specialist needs to be innovative, driven, visionary, and reliable.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain cooperative team relationship within the agency and with external community organizations
- Meet with clients on a regular basis, or as needed after the initial meeting, to discuss routine recovery issues from a peer perspective.
- Provide direct assistance in the form of transportation, filling out forms or making phone calls, and accompanying clients to appointments and court.
- Transport and remain with clients at crisis appointments.
- Assist in finding necessary community services to meet basic needs.
- Outreach and follow-up with non-residential program participants where they live as needed, help acclimate them to their new surroundings and explore recovery resources in the area.
- Provide education about and attend self-help groups, obtaining sponsorship, and assisting clients in finding recovery support meetings that accommodate their schedules and child care needs.
- Role model behavior that is consistent with and supportive to people in recovery from substance abuse, such behavior will include upholding ethical standards of the program and reliable attendance.
- Provide personal assistance in the completion of daily living skills.
- Transporting clients to and from Medication Assisted Therapy appointments.
Additional Duties:
- Assist in developing and implementing Alumna community events
- Assist in planning and supervising recreational activities for clients.
- Maintain confidential client records.
- Perform support tasks, such as processing client record requests, filing, photocopying, answering telephones, compiling statistical reports
- Attend weekly clinical staff meetings
- Other duties, as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to work flexible schedule
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Congenial, organized, and compassionate individual to work in a cooperative team relationship within the agency and with external community organizations.
- Demonstrable social and interpersonal communication skills in working with people of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds to maintain effective, warm and supportive relationships
- Personal experience in substance use disorder recovery
· Knowledge and experience in the field of substance use disorder and/or mental health
· Valid Minnesota Driver’s license, a reliable vehicle and a good driving record
· Microsoft Office and computer experience
· High School Diploma/GED
· Pass DHS background study
· 18 years of age or older
· Free of communicable disease
· Able to lift 25 lbs.
· Able to climb stairs
