Description

The Curator of Education to develops, plans, and supervises a range of programs and co-curricular opportunities that enrich and expand the educational mission of both the Wichita Falls Museum of Art (WFMA) and Midwestern State University (MSU). Primary responsibilities include planning, managing, implementing, supervising, and evaluating all museum educational programs consistent with the WFMA's mission. The position plays a key role through creative engagement with the MSU campus and surrounding communities through innovative programming. The Curator of Education develops goals, plans, calendars, reports, recommendations, and budgets related to the museum's educational programming. This is a grant-funded appointment.


Examples

Manages and implements the WFMA's Interpretive Plan through strategies and programs that describe the museum’s educational philosophy, intended goals and outcomes, targeted audiences, and visitor experience. Programs include, but are not limited to, Changing Exhibition Program, Permanent Collection, Online Database, Art of Seeing Art Tours, On the Wall workshops, Summer Art Camp and an Internship Program. Responsible for the development, implementation, promotion and evaluation of the museum's education programming for audiences, which includes school children K - 12, public and private school teachers, families, university students, faculty and staff, and senior citizens. Charged with the supervision of education student workers, volunteers, and internships. Works with guest artists and lecturers to enhance educational opportunities. Serves as the liaison to articulate, coordinate, enhance, and promote faculty and student engagement between the museum and the university's academic units. Serves as a liaison with public and private schools, community groups, and other target audiences to arrange a program of field trips, guided tours, demonstrations and workshops. Develops working knowledge of the permanent collection to conceptualize educational programming and encourage research projects and internships. Works collaboratively in a museum team environment. May teach informal workshops at the museum and performs other duties as assigned. Reports to the Museum Director.


Physical Condition

Moderate physical activities required of general office work and the ability to supervise and participate in the educational programming activities, and physical setup/breakdown of events designed for the general public and MSU groups.

Experience

Experience in public or museum programming management and building interpretive content within an art museum or equivalent institution. Experience in public speaking and engagement.


Knowledge

Required working knowledge of current museum best practices. Experience in classroom management techniques and practices.


Education

Bachelor's Degree in humanities, liberal arts, art history, museum studies, or related field required. Master's degree is desirable OR a combination of education, experience, and training may be applied.


Additional Requirements

Required excellent communication skills to work in a museum team environment and with the public and with MSU faculty, staff, and students. Strong organizational skills with accuracy and attention to detail. Skill in problem-solving and making sound decisions. Must be available to work a non-traditional schedule including evenings and weekends and travel occasionally.

Requires the ability to maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Personal cell phone usage may be required to complete position duties, including multi-function authentication requirements. Regular reliable attendance is required.

This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check. Position is designated as a Responsible Employee as outlined by Title IX. May serve as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
