The shipping and receiving clerk position involves the responsibility of accurately managing the flow of incoming and outgoing goods within a warehouse or facility, including tasks like receiving deliveries, verifying quantities against purchase orders, storing inventory, packaging items for shipment, preparing shipping documents, and coordinating with carriers to ensure timely delivery; often requiring physical labor to unload trucks, operate forklifts, and maintain accurate inventory records.
Responsibilities of a shipping and receiving clerk may include, but not limited to:
Receiving shipments
- Unloading trucks, verifying incoming deliveries against purchase orders, inspecting for damage, and reporting any discrepancies.
Order fulfillment
- Picking and packing customer orders based on pick tickets, ensuring correct quantities and items are included.
Shipping preparation
- Creating shipping labels, generating bills of lading, and preparing packages for shipment.
Documentation
- Maintaining detailed records of incoming and outgoing shipments, including dates, quantities, and tracking numbers.
Logistics coordination
- Scheduling deliveries with carriers, coordinating pick-ups, and tracking shipment status.
Quality control
- Inspecting items for damage or defects before shipping.
Forklift operation
- Operating forklifts to move pallets and heavy items within the warehouse (if required).
Inventory control
- Accurately recording received items in inventory management systems, storing goods in designated locations, and maintaining stock levels and immediately notify supervisory and management staff of any discrepancies. Maintain an accurate count of all inventories and perform cyclical counts as needed.
Skills and qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED and/or 1 - 3 yrs of recent experience in a similar role.
- Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple shipments.
- Ability to drive a forklift preferred.
- Physical ability to lift heavy boxes and maneuver pallets.
- Computer skills for inventory management systems and shipping labels, including Outlook email, Quickbooks & Microsoft Excel (or other comparable applications) preferred.
- Clean driving record and ability to drive a Pick-up truck to assist Parts Driver as needed.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Communicate appropriately and professionally with all colleagues and customers.
- Knowledge of warehouse safety procedures.
This is a union position from 8 – 4:30 position M/F and overtime eligible.
