Title: Behavior Support Specialist

Reports to: Behavior Support Facilitator

 

General Summary:   Skilled Behavior Support Specialists are responsible for working with students in collaboration with school teams to implement educational and behavior intervention plans. The Skilled Behavior Support Specialist will assist students and the building team with day to day activities, monitor behavior, record and collect data on students’ progress, and communicate successes and struggles to further problem solve. In this role they will work as part of a team to implement a behavioral plan, collect data, and participate in team meetings to problem solve.  

 

Essential Functions:

  • Skilled Support Specialists under the direction of the MTS-Behavior Facilitator and in conjunction with the school team will implement Tier 2.2 and Tier 3 behavior strategies and supports. 

  • Assist instructional personnel by participating as a team member in the development and monitoring of comprehensive behavioral objectives, goals, and plans, including a Functional Behavioral Assessment, and/or a Positive Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)

  • Work as a team member with administration, teachers, counselors, social workers, school psychologists and other personnel to develop appropriate and positive behavior plans enabling students to succeed across a variety of settings

  • Work one-on-one with students to affect behavior changes; evaluate student's needs and provide interventions to redirect behavior

  • Collaborates with teachers and administrators to identify student needs, coordinate intervention efforts, and provide academic assistance.

  • Must understand and respond appropriately to student needs and maintain a calm and positive attitude with students and colleagues

  • Support social skill training and assist students in implementing skills for successful integration in the classroom

  • Provides direct service to students’ to de-escalate behaviors and implement physical interventions as needed.

  • Keep records of student behavior progress and programs implemented to achieve desired behaviors.

  • Assess and objectively analyze behavioral crisis-situations, make proper judgment decisions, respond and communicate quickly and effectively

  • Be trained and updated in safety, security, physical restraints, and behavior management procedures

  • Work independently under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods

  • Ability to take and apply feedback

  • Effective communication skills

Qualifications:

  1. Education Level: Minimum: High School Diploma; Preferred: Some College

  1. Certification or Licensure: Minimum: None

  1. Experience/Knowledge desired:        

Minimum: Ability to assist with instruction; background or experience in working with children who demonstrate behavior challenges; displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality; willingness to learn alternative methods to deal with inappropriate school behaviors; must be able to respond rapidly in emergency situations; ability to work with and meet individual needs of students

 

Preferred:  Registered Behavior Technician (RBT): willingness to complete RBT training;  background or experience working with children who have Autism
