To maintain roads, bridges, and rights-of-way in a safe condition by performing general and special highway maintenance work; operates equipment at skilled and responsible levels; and performs preventative maintenance on buildings, equipment, and tools; all while adhering to safety procedures.

This job description indicates the normal type and level of work expected of the incumbent. Incumbent may be asked to perform other duties as apparent or assigned.
- Maintains roads, bridges, and right-of-ways in safe manner by operating a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment and tools with considerable skill. Duties include, but are not limited to: blading, snow plowing, ice control/sanding; determining when and where to place sand and/or salt; mowing, applying herbicides; brush cutting, and removal of brush and trees encroaching on right-of- way; marking pavement; graveling; trash removal; washing bridges; sealing cracks; culvert steaming, cleaning, and replacement, etc.
- Must be available for 24/7 response if needed for hazardous weather or emergency situations during evenings, night, and weekends. Performs emergency snowplowing, ice control, hauling, tree removal, and other emergency maintenance operations during severe weather, road washouts, road closures, etc.
- Performs a variety of janitorial and maintenance duties in and around the highway maintenance shop.
- Responsible for service, appearance, safety, and general condition of designated equipment. Conducts daily safety check of all equipment including fluid levels, lights, tires, etc. Performs complete service including regular fluid changes, lubrication, and maintenance on trucks and equipment assigned. Installs and removes snow plow equipment as directed by the Highway Maintenance Superintendent.
- Performs sign replacement and installs temporary signs and barricades.
- Communicates courteously and professionally, and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions. Conveys basic information to the public, and resolves routine complaints.
- High School Diploma or equivalent and three years’ experience in a related position; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must successfully complete a criminal history background check.
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License; Class A Commercial Driver’s License obtained within six months of hire.
- Experience operating heavy equipment and snowplow trucks preferred; tanker endorsement and Class A Commercial Driver’s License preferred.
