What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coding Specialist Full Time (0.8 FTE) position at Mille Lacs Health System?
This position is located at our main campus in Onamia, Minnesota - onsite only
Performs ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding. Perform coding for both inpatient and outpatient services. Works with EHR/EMR.
Job Duties
The essential functions of this job are identified with an asterisk (*) at the end of the bullet point.
- Completes coding with minimum 90% accuracy. Completes charts 3-5 days after discharge. Abstracts information from patient records in a timely manner. Assigns accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS codes, and DRG assignment, if applicable. Assigns/audits E/M levels for services coded by coder.*
- Queries providers on the same day coding questions are identified. Queries providers when code assignment is not straightforward or the documentation is unclear or inadequate for coding purposes.*
- Provides reporting as directed by the Health Information Manager. May include reporting for the Medical Staff at appropriate meetings.
- Keeps current with coding and reimbursement guidelines.*
- Attends webinars and training opportunities sponsored by MLHS. Attends conferences and training opportunities outside of MLHS.
- Brings concerns to Manager within a week of discovering the concern.
- Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding and the code of Ethics by AHIMA and adheres to the official coding guidelines. Shows integrity and refuses to participate or conceal unethical or illegal coding practices at all times.*
Required Education and Experience
- Requires at least one year working with Electronic Medical Record.
- Must successfully complete an accredited coding program (AHIMA preferred and/or AAPC) and keep up credentials as specified by the professional organization's guidelines.
- Strongly prefer current coding credentials (AHIMA and/or AAPC), or the ability to gain credentials within 3 months of hire.
- At least one year coding experience.
- Must be detail oriented, have strong organizational skills with the flexibility to prioritize workload.
