Job Summary / Basic Function

The Department of Early, Middle, and Elementary Education in the College of Education and Human Services welcomes applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning August .

Responsibilities include teaching, advising students, scholarly or creative work and department and university service. Actual assignments will depend upon department needs. The College of Education, Department of Early, Middle, and Elementary Education, is seeking to add a collaborative and creative colleague for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor who shares the University and College’s commitment to high quality literacy training, specifically structured literacy, potentially middle level literacy, and ESL, and has a demonstrated record of teaching, research / scholarship and service in a literacy / ESL education context. This position is a nine-month faculty appointment starting January or August . The expected teaching load is four courses per fall and spring semesters, with the possibility to teach during the summer semesters based on departmental and enrollment needs. Additionally, this position includes teaching at the graduate level, in an M.Ed. in Language and Literacy with a reading specialist and / or ESL specialist certification / concentration.

Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications as well as aligned with the details contained in the .

Minimum qualifications required to be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate include having an earned doctorate and a minimum of five years of full-time teaching experience (or its equivalent) and scholarship commensurate with this rank.

  • A summary (2 – 5 pages) of Scholarly and / or Creative Activity Plan outlining 3 – 5 year agenda involving undergraduate or graduate students.
  • Copies of registrar-issued unofficial transcripts for all degrees conferred and in progress (the successful candidate will be required to provide registrar-issued official transcripts from the issuing institution(s) directly to the Provost’s Office by the start date).
  • Three current letters of reference, (applicant to submit names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of individuals who will be contacted to upload current letters of reference directly to a confidential website).

The State System Employee Benefits Summary for faculty can be found at : ABD in Literacy Education, or an emphasis in literacy education in either Early Childhood, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Administration, or closely related field. Must have evidence of completed doctorate (Ed.D. or Ph.D.) within 3 years.

  • Evidence of experience with and commitment to diverse populations.
  • Knowledge and skills to : teach undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy education such as structured literacy, content area reading, literacy methods, assessment & intervention, and practicum.supervise clinical field experiences.
  • Recent and ongoing record of scholarship (e.g. national conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications, etc.).
  • Evidence of strong communication and interpersonal skills for advising and working with undergraduate students.
  • Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and / or public-school personnel.
  • Successful interview, teaching demonstration, and research presentation.
  • Successful completion of three background clearances.
  • Valid driver’s license and / or ability to travel to / from field placements within 50 miles of the University.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate. At least five years of experience in early childhood (Pre-K – Grade 4) and / or middle level (Grades 4-8) in public school classrooms.
  • Reading Specialist certificate or equivalent.
  • ESL Specialist certification and / or evidence of graduate coursework in ESL instruction.
  • Evidence of teaching (traditional & online) effectiveness.
  • Evidence of ability to conduct and supervise scholarly activities.
  • Recent record of published scholarly works.
  • Evidence of successful supervision of clinical field experiences.
  • Experience as a specialized literacy professional.
  • Earned supervisory certificate in reading.
  • Expertise in Dyslexia identification and intervention.
