Position Summary:
The Director of Payroll Operations is responsible for leading and managing all payroll functions
across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. This role ensures timely, accurate, and
compliant payroll processing, tax filings, and reporting in accordance with local, state/provincial,
and federal laws. The Director will drive operational excellence, process improvement, and
strategic alignment within the payroll function, while ensuring a positive employee experience
and strong internal controls.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee end-to-end payroll processing and compliance for U.S., Puerto Rico, and
- Lead a high-performing team, including managers over Payroll Operations, Tax and
- Compliance, and Payroll Systems.
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of multi-state/province payrolls, including
- executive, bonus, off-cycle, and equity transactions.
- Maintain full compliance with federal, state/provincial, and local payroll tax laws, labor
- regulations, and reporting requirements across all jurisdictions.
- Manage vendor relationships with payroll providers, tax agencies, and software platforms
- (e.g., Workday, OSV).
- Partner with HR, Benefits, Legal, Finance, Tax and IT to ensure alignment and data
- integrity across systems and processes.
- Lead payroll audits, internal controls, SOX compliance, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Identify and implement process improvements, automation opportunities, and best
- practices to scale operations.
- Provide executive-level reporting and insights into payroll performance, cost analysis,
- and compliance metrics.
- Stay current on legislative changes and proactively adjust processes and systems
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field.
- 10 years of progressive payroll experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership or
- director-level role.
- Demonstrated experience with U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canadian payroll laws and
- Strong understanding of payroll tax regulations, garnishments, benefits deductions, and
- year-end processing.
- Experience with global or multi-jurisdiction payroll systems; Workday, ADP, or OSV
- Proven leadership and team management skills with the ability to mentor and develop
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) certification preferred.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with union payroll, expatriates, or equity compensation is a plus.
- Strong change management and project leadership experience.
- Bilingual (English and Spanish or French) is an asset.
