Job Summary


Under the general direction of the CEO, the Chief Clinical Officer is responsible for providing clinical leadership, promotion of superior quality patient care and satisfaction, standardizing clinical policies, protocols, and procedures, developing clinical strategic goals and program expansion, and contributing to recruitment and retention of clinical staff. They will promote inter-departmental collaboration while working in alignment with the rest of administration. In addition, this position is responsible for the planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting, budgeting, and management of supplies and equipment in a way that is meaningful and financially responsible for nursing and ancillary services. 


They are responsible for overseeing a number of clinical directors.


Duties and Responsibilities


Operations

  • Oversees the development, implementation, and monitoring of clinical standards for all clinical support employees, beginning with the hiring process and continuing through their entire employment to ensure clinical competency. 
  • Responsible for the quality of care provided to the patients at Minidoka Memorial Hospital, as measured by State and Federal surveys, audits, quality metrics and patient satisfaction surveys.
  • Ensure that staff is clinically competent and trained on their role in patient safety, performance improvement, and risk management. 
  • Responsible for effective communications with the public, physicians, and other areas of MMH, and the employees supervised by the CCO. This position serves as one of the primary public relations contacts between MMH and the public, including effectively answering inquiries and questions about services and/or complaints about MMH. 
  • Resolves staff and patient concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required. 
  • Ensures that staff offer the best possible support to providers in their respective departments. 
  • Ensures appropriate clinical education is available and provided to support the development and continued competencies of clinical employees 

Quality, Compliance and Accreditation

  • Develops, plans, implements, evaluates effectiveness, and ensures adherence to policies, procedures, and protocols. 
  • Ensures policies, protocols and procedures are developed with consideration of up and downstream effects. 
  • Prepares reports/surveys/statistics to be reported to Administration, the Board of Trustees, Medical Executive Committee, and others as needed.
  • Assists in utilizing information obtained via performance improvement activities to seek and act on opportunities to improve patient care processes.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety, emergency management and infection prevention and control.
  • Actively participates and engages in surveys and corresponding corrective action plans. 

Financial

  • Responsible for the cost effectiveness of areas of responsibility, as measured by realizing a margin as budgeted, budgetary compliance, and achievement of specific financial and productivity goals.
  • Works closely with Revenue Cycle to identify errors in clinical charge capture and errors that generate delays in payment.
  • Ensure that clinical workflows and utilization are evaluated on an on-going basis to identify areas for improvement and any resources needed to support optimal productivity. 

Leadership

  • Manage organizational leaderships in a manner that builds mutual trust and respect.
  • Establish trusting and collaborative relationships among admin, directors, managers, and staff. 
  • Seek and provide routine feedback to clinical directors and managers to promote effective communication, collaboration, and growth of leadership skills. 
  • Act as a patient and staff advocate. 
  • Ensure the vision, mission, and values of MMH are implemented and aligned with MMH culture.
  • Responsible for the morale of the employees under their supervision, as measured by observation, conversation, and employee surveys, and by the ability to recruit competent workers. 
  • Provides support and assistance to the medical staff and Board of Trustees as required.
  • Serves as a member of committees as necessary.
  • Effectively and consistently communicates information between administration and staff and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
  • Will be responsible for other duties as assigned by the CEO. 


Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • One of the following:
  • BSN - Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing 
  • BHA - Bachelor’s in Healthcare Administration/Management 
  • Other applicable bachelor’s degree in healthcare-related field 
  • One of the following:
  • 5 years management experience with at least 3 years’ experience at the Director level or above 
  • Independent practitioner with at least two year’s leadership experience in hospital or other healthcare setting
  • Current, or eligible, for a license in the State of Idaho (applies to clinicians)

Preferred Requirements

  • One of the following:
  • MSN - Master’s Degree in Nursing 
  • MHA - Master of Healthcare Administration 
  • MBA-HC - Master’s in Business Administration in Healthcare Administration
  • Other applicable master’s degree in healthcare-relevant field  
  • 5 years’ experience in patient care
  • 10 years of management/leadership experience, including CNO or COO experience 
  • Current ACLS and PALS (applies to clinicians)

  • Ability to identify the need for change, anticipating, recognizing and creatively solving resistance to change; working with others to view change as a challenge and opportunity for growth.
  • Positive, creative, and innovative with a strong understanding of the business aspects of healthcare.  
  • Leads by example, able to articulate a clear vision and expectations for patient care services and other areas of responsibility.
