Description : Job Summary
The Ward Clerk is a member of the nursing staff who primarily performs various clerical, receptionist and communication duties in the nursing unit.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Answering telephones, using proper identification, responding appropriately to all hospital departments, physicians, patient families and visitors.
- Refer and place telephone calls as necessary and directed.
- Ensure all documentation for, transfer, and discharge forms are completed and processed correctly.
- Requisition supplies from purchasing department.
- All transcribed orders are to be checked and counter signed by a license nurse and physician
- Scan all signed orders and other documents into EMR
- Maintain bulletin boards and nurse’s station desk.
- Assist physicians in location patient charts.
- Notify kitchen of new diets, diet changes, patient transfers, dismissals, and deaths.
- Inform Admitting / Business Office of all admissions, dismissals, and deaths. When necessary, notify other pertinent departments including lab, x-ray, medical records, and pharmacy.
- Refer any unusual problems to the charge nurse, or Director of Nursing.
- Notify proper departments of new admits..
- Enter admit information as needed. Go over consent / medical insurance paperwork with new admits.
- Actively engage in quality improvement activities.
- Ensure all forms are up to date
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements
Perceive the nature of sounds by the ear, express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word, perceive characteristics of objects through the eyes, extend arms and hands in any direction, seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hands, pick, pinch, or otherwise work with fingers, perceive such attributes of objects or materials as size, shape, temperature, or texture; and stoop, kneel crouch, and crawl. Must be able to lift 25 pounds maximum with frequent lifting, carrying pushing, and pulling of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Continuous walking and standing. Must be able to identify, match, and distinguish colors.
