Ministry with Community (MwC) is a non-profit organization located in Kalamazoo, MI. We are a daytime shelter and resource center, open 365 days a year from 6:30 am-4:00 pm. The mission of MwC is to empower people to make positive life changes. Position Objective
The Human Resource (HR) Generalist assists the Executive Director to further MwC’s strategic plan initiatives. This position researches, creates, implements and maintains policies and procedures regarding human resources, including the Employee Handbook, onboarding of new hires and volunteers and maintenance of personnel files, in conjunction with the Executive Director. The HR Generalist also acts as a thoughtful leader as a member of the management team and serves as the liaison to the Human Resources Committee. Attention to detail, confidentiality, and excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written, are paramount. The HR Generalist works with identified staff to schedule volunteers.
The HR Generalist must demonstrate compassion, integrity and trust. This individual must uphold the highest standards of ethics and values in alignment with the mission of Ministry with Community.
Position Requirements
- Minimum of two years in a successful experience in a Human Resources role.
- Experience in the Human Resources field and/or human service program design, planning, implementation and evaluation.
- Understanding of best practices related to hiring, employee relations, HR policies, confidentiality, etc.
- Ability to communicate with others quickly and effectively with outstanding oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in common computer software, including Zoom, MS Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint.
- Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods, bend, twist, stoop, lift and reach is required. Occasional lifting/moving objects of up to 20 pounds at a time.
- Ability to learn quickly, the desire to continue to learn, and exhibit creative problem-solving.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Commitment to the highest level of customer service for both internal and external stakeholders: members, volunteers, colleagues, donors, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education.
- Three or more years in a Human Resources role.
- Experience using QuickBooks software.
- Multiple languages, including Sign Language.
Performance Expectations
- First and foremost, place MwC’s mission and member needs front and center in all processes, decisions, tasks, work and efforts.
- Actively support the Board of Directors and Executive Director in carrying out strategic goals and objectives.
- Utilize the MwC current strategic plan as the primary guide for determining the focus of all department efforts.
- Work to establish effective relationships with our diverse staff and members, while maintaining an environment of dignity and respect.
- Use excellent interpersonal communication skills and conflict management.
- Construct templates for job descriptions, exit interviews, evaluations, etc.
- Complete administrative and clerical duties such as filing, printing, mailing, typing, copying, scanning, sorting, and distribution of mail.
- Provide a friendly, caring, and timely response to answer questions in person, via phone or email from donors, colleagues, volunteers, and members.
- Administer human resource paperwork such as preparing new hire packets, gathering completed paperwork and other HR projects as needed.
- Support payroll process – Run timeclock report, review PTO requests, and prepare summary for accountant.
- Provide support in the absence of the Administrative Assistant.
- Act as staff liaison to the HR Committee. Participate in Board of Directors meetings. Actively participate in and contribute to management team and organization-wide meetings on a regular basis.
- Other duties as assigned.
Wage, Benefits, Hours
Wage: $22-$25 hourly, hourly/non-exempt commensurate with qualifications.
